My Alma Mater My Alma Mater, mother of my deeds, To thee I’m debtor; for to thee I turned For useful knowledge and the arts man needs, — And duty, service, wisdom, — these I learned. Before thy altars, bowed in earnest quest, I sought the way to shape my destiny; Today remembrance makes of me a guest Within the sacred walls that honored me. The biased world, the cloven tongues of slaves, And minds once bound in fetters of distress; Turn friends, not foes, to her who learning gave And view the temple, light and truth to bless. Bright star that guides the sailor far at night, Throughout the boundless realm where wild waves plajq Has kinship in this sweet maternal light That shines to guide mankind in every way. To him who hails thee as a faithful guide, And follows where thy councils point the end, No day will have regretful tears to hide For seeking preparation from a friend. Forget thy precepts, or thy creed engrave, Or turn to naught thy high instruction plan? I’d lose myself in folly, as a knave, Did I not use my talents like a man.
