DEDICATED TO: BUILDING EACH COMPLETE LIFE ornce or me rnesloem Dear Students: NATIONAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION an imfepezzdefzt elementary teackers rollege ANWVERSARY EVANSTON, ILLINOIS This year National College of Education is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding, and those of us who belong to the N.C.E. family at this time are privileged to be a part of this important year. We are not so concerned with singing the praises of past glories--as important as that may be--as we are with taking time to reappraise our goals and objectives. Our heritage is a rich one and reflects the dedication of many noble men and women who have helped build our college during the past seventy-five years. Our anniversary committee chose for its theme for the year HBuilding Each Com lete Life.H I can think of no better slogan for our school, as this has been the goal from the beginning when Elizabeth Harrison, our first president, founded the college in 1886. This certainly was the objective of Edna Dean Baker, who was the second president, serving from 1920 to 1949. Through these years our educa- tional reputation was being built in this country and throughout the world. The individual and what was best for his development formed the basic structure of our curriculum. In the world in which we live we are constantly challenged, and more and more we realize the importance of individual dignities and basic values. Our children, as they mature to adulthood, need we hope will come from worthwhile Our Diamond Jubilee gives us our course for the years that lie centennial of National College of world we know today. Will the adults then, who are children today, look an inner emotional and spiritual security that experiences in their formative years. plotting at the the with the privilege of setting our goals and ahead. The world that we will live in Education will be quite different from pride on the educational experiences they received in school or will they feel that they were Hshort changedu because teachers and parents failed to give them what was due them to develop to their fullest? Most all of you who are graduating are going into teaching. This is a privilege as you will be helping youngsters build the foundation in their lives that will help make our 75th anniversary theme a reality in HBuilding Each Complete Life.H Sincerely yours, jgff . -11- K. Wren Staley In 1934 a lady from Kentucky joined the staff of NCE as the first Dean of Students. In the years that have followed, Wren Staley has become close to the hearts of NCE students and faculty. She represents the very spirit of the college. Miss Staley's great devotion to education began early in her life, and at seventeen she was teaching in a one-room schoolg after that she went on to teach at all grade levels. Her excellence as a teacher augumented by her great love of finding new insights into her greatest interests--English and Latin. Class sessions with Miss Staley not only are intel- lectually stimualting, but are filled with her humor. Wren Staley is loved by students and faculty here at NCE, not only for her excellence as a teacher, but also for her deep concern for all whom she knows. Our thanks and love to her for the many years she has given to National College of Education. -13-
