To Dr. Eugene B. Cantelupe A genuine concern for each of us .. . a sympathetic understanding of our problems ... a vitality that stimulates our curiosity ... all these are part of a devotion to a chosen profession which makes him a teach- er with the creative proficiency of an artist. His willingness to share those little informal and informative experiences which give us a better understanding of the arts has put the human in his humanities classes. Even Venus has become part of our everyday lives! ln appreciation for what he has brought to us we gratefully dedicate this book to him ... Dr. Cantelupe ... teacher extraordinaire! A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops. Henry Brooks Adams -7-

American higher education needs to have a re-affirmation of its goals and obiectives in the light of an ever-changing world filled with tensions and challenges. We must never lose sight of the need forthe education of the whole individual, which includes his moral and spiritual as well as physical, intellectual and social development. We have a concern for the integrity of the individual and the contribution that he can make to society and the free world. At National College of Education we have always had the growth of each individual as our primary objective with the realization that education of a teacher should be broad enough to include not only what is needed for the professional know-how , but an under- standing of the broad areas of general education. We believe that an understanding and appreciation of the liberal arts is basic to a well-educated person. A teacher must be such a person. Through this approach to higher education a teacher broadens his own intellec- tual base by keeping a free and open mind and reaching decisions only after careful con- sideration. One ofthe real strengths in American higher education is this liberal ap- proach, through which the individual is taught to think and to express himself. We often are on the defensive when the critics attack modern education and assert we need to build more scientists and technologists. It may be true that we need more and better technical experts, but we also need more and better people with specialties in all fields of learning. The challenge facing us in the months and years ahead will not be that of producing a nation of scientists, mathematicians, etc., but that of building a program that will continue to respect and meet the needs of each individual in a free and democratic society. K. Richard Johnson, President -9-
