To Mr. Linford Marquart His grey hair with its streak of black, his thoughtful, penetrating eyes, and his cynical, yet humble smile introduce our history professor. With subtle sarcasm and profound personal anecdotes, he takes history from the realm of events and dates and reveals it as an exciting tale ot human personalities. With the skill of the philosopher, he translates the complex chapters of yesterday into single sentence tore- casts of tomorrow. As he treats each person as an individual from whom he can learn, he teaches human under- standing by example. - 7 -

ls Education today preparing young people to live in the highly scientific and technological world that lies ahead? This is the question that is constantly being asked of educators. It is a matter that should be of great concern to each one of us. We agree that we have moved far ahead in our understanding of things scientific and technological. Man's desire to move into space is an example of the ever present thirst for adventure and knowledge. Need for more understanding of science also brings to us the need for more understanding in the human relations-social science areas. The tragic explosions of Little Rock prove that with all of man's knowledge there has been failure in the most important area facing our civilization--that of getting along with people. We need to build for ourselves the security needed for fullest development, physical, intellectual, social, moral and spiritual. Unless man can control what has been made available to him through his research, and un- less it can be directed toward the advancement of ALL men, his findings will have little sig- nificance and will lead toward destructive ends. We are living in a thrilling time when great advance is taking place in many areas of endeavor. lt is my hope that we who have the privilege of planning a part of the destiny of youth may not fail in building a solid foun- dation today that can give the strength to meet tomorrow's challenges regardless of what they may be. The opportunity for education and for teachers has never been greater. K. Richard Johnson, President - 9 ,
