Our World is shrinking rapidly as we move into the Unknown space age with missiles, rockets, space platforms , etc. It makes us Wonder just Where our scientific progress is taking us. We all realize that We need more of science and mathematics than we have ever had before, and We also need to encourage our fine young people with scientific interests and abilities to go into this important field. We must not get out of balance in our thinking and go overboard for the scientific neglecting other areas of leaming and living that help build for strengths in our American way of life. As teachers and future teachers we must realize the importance of balance in education. The Humanities and Social Sciences must not be neglected. We have a long Ways to go in the area of human relations and our ability to get along with people. It is encouraging to see that American educators realize the im- portance of this balance. It not only gives one experiences in broad subject matter areas but helps build for a philosophy of life that we all need in a world filled with fears and uncertainties. Along with this broad experience in general education comes a greater inner security. Let us not forget that what goes into one's education becomes a part of the individual and can never be removed. This is another one of the strengths of our American educational system. The concern and respect for the individual must always be our foremost goal. K. Richard Johnson, President
