PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE I have often been reminded of one of my favorite quotations af Sir Francis Bacon, Knowledge has Power. What potent three words and what a dynamic force is tied up within this quotation. For centuries man has been striving for knowledge and the history of civilization proves to us that there have been periodic rises and 'ffallsl' of man in his quest for knowledge. History also tells us that great civiliza- tions have developed in various parts of the world where culture and scientific progress seemed to be far advanced. For some dynamic reason the civilization fell and passed into oblivion. For hundreds of years civilization has again been on the way upward. As a result of our scientific and technological progress man has at his disposal knowledge that a decade ago was unknown. Also tied up within this knowledge is the potency' of the civilized mind. He knows that the knowledge at his disposal can build for a better civilization if the potent forces are directed toward constructive ends. Education should help each one of us to channel this force toward constructive goals knowing that through these experiences we not only gain in our own inner security but help to build for a world that profits from what has been learned by others. A college education is a privilege and should be considered as such. With this privilege comes a challenge to continue to have the potent forces of knowledge directed toward the betterment of mankind. As this desire and determination exists in the minds of men then will the power of knowledge lead more quickly towards a goal that all civ- ilization is seeking -- a lasting peace. K. Richard Johnson, President
