THE SCRAPPER Editor Ella Mae Floyd Assistant Editor Tommie Carter Business Manager Bobby Jim Byers Assistant Business Manager Richard Johnson Till the stars shall shine no longer, Till the flowers all fade and die; We'll be true to Alma Mater, To our dear ole Nashville High. We will cherish every memory, We will sing her praises too; And to dear ole Alma Mater We'll be faithful and true. '54 FOREWORD We, the staff of the '54 Scrapper, present this annual to you in the hope that in future years in looking at it you can recapture in memory some of the good times enjoyed at NHS, and will remember how interesting and beneficial your years here have been. DEDICATION We take great pride in dedicating the '54 Scrapper to the faculty of NHS, who have made our years here both profitable and pleasant — profitable because of their untiring efforts to educate us and make us good citizens, and pleasant because of their willingness not only to work with us, but to develop strong and lasting friendships with us. SPORTS REVIEW The Nashville High School Scrappers opened their 1953 season at Scrapper Field against the Ashdown Panthers. After a slow start the Scrappers came back to blank the Panthers 25-0. The Scrapper for the game was Jewell Copeland, a transfer student from Hope, who blocked a Panther Punt for a touchdown. The next game the Scrappers journeyed to Hot Springs to meet the Trojans from the Big Seven. The Scrappers fought all the way and came out victorious by the score of 27-20. Scrapper for the game was Richard Johnson who caught one touchdown pass and made one extra point. He played a fine game from his end position. Next, the Scrappers went to Malvern to play the Malvern Leopards. The Leopards had one of the best teams in the state and outweighed the Scrappers 15 poinds to the man. But nevertheless the Scrappers played their usual good game while losing 35-13. The entire Scrapper team was the Scrapper of this game. The Scrappers were back home for their next game. The Stamps Yellow jackets provided the competition for the Scrappers in this game. The game was a thriller all the way with Nashville coming out on the short end of a 20-19 score. Scrappers for the game were Harold Conley, who played a fine game from his fullback position, Wayne Bohanon, and Lester Bardley Jr., who both played an outstanding defensive game. The Scrappers hit their stride again when they defeated the Prescott Curley Wolves by the score of 41-0. Scrapper of this game was Phil Yates who carried the Scrapper offensive load from his half-back position. DeQueen's Leopards were next in line for the Scrappers. This was DeQueen's home coming, and the Leopards were up to the occasion. They trounced the Scrapper team 33-15. Scrapper of the game was Billy Blakely who although playing with an injured leg, continually broke through the Leopard line to down the DeQueen backs for losses. Pat Robbins Billy Balkely Captain Captain The Scrappers traveled to Hope for their next encounter and lost a heartbreaker, 20-13. The Scrappers just didn't have the punch when they needed it. Scrappers for the game were Charles Williams and John Holt who played brilliantly in the line. Returning home for their next game the Scrappers defeated the Mena Bearcats coached by Tiny Thornton, 33-0. In this game Val Gene Jamison literally ran wild. Jamison scored three touchdowns, one on a 40 yard pass interception and one extra point for a total of 19 points. He was easily Scrapper of the game. That was Jamison's last game because the following week he was operated on for appendicitis. In Jamison the Scrappers lost a valuable man. In the next game the Dierks Outlaws came to Nashville and defeated the Scrappers for one of the few times in history, 6-0. It was a hard fought game all the way with the Outlaws having the upper hand. Scrappers for the game were two sophomores. Bob Cowling and William Copeland. The Scrappers hit the win column in the next game against the Gurdon Go-Devils, 33-0. In this game Pat Robbins was the Scrapper of the game. He seemed to do nothing wrong. He passed for three touchdowns and two extra points and himself scored two touchdowns and one extra point. He had a hand in all the Scrapper scoring. The Scrappers went to Fairview for their next ball game. They played one of their best games of the season against a far superior Cardinal team. The final score was 20-13 with Fairview winning. Eugene Funderburk played an outstanding game from his end position and he was the Scrapper of the game. Our annual Thanksgiving Day game with Magnolia was a tight one all the way. Despite injuries to key players the Scrappers made a close game out of it. The Panthers defeated the Scrappers 12-7 with two touchdowns early in the game. Scrappers for the game were Tracy Smith and Robert Walker. These boys were first year men and seemed to come into their own in this contest. This ended the Scrapper season with a record of 5 wins and 7 loses. Captains elected for the 1954 football season are Lester Bradley Jr. and Eugene Funderburk. Returning to next year's squad will be Pete Walston, Bobby Cowling, William Copeland, Carroll Smithson, Harold Conley, Denzil Woodruff, Wayne Bohanon. Bobby Blakely, and James Lewis. With these returning and a fine junior team coming up the Scrappers should make a fine showing next year.
