llElllCATl0 F0 llEE LIBERFY AND PURSUIT OF HAPPINESD We hold these truths to be self ew de t that all men are created equal that they are endowed with certain rights that among these are Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness That to secure these r ghts governments are instituted among men driving their Just powers from the consent of the govern ment Those men who signed the Declaration of lndependance called it the pursuit of Hap piness The right that every man was to en Joy in this new country was the right to pur sue happiness to roll up your sleeves and go after it and struggle and win it with your own hands and wits Because the people who first heard those words understood them because they realized their r ght was one of pursuit they went out with strength and couraoe and faith to dig mines and quarries and build factories and mills Their sons and daughters too under stood and pumped oil out of sand harnessed the power of streams and welded one end of the country to the other with rails of steel Because of this right they made it the richest most powerful nation on earth So long as the true meaning of those earlier words is understood the rights that they give will never be lost So let us help to hasten that day of world peace when as a people we again may de- lare our rights among these are Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness Z
