NARRAGANSETT HIGH SCHOOL Narragansett, Rhode Island Dedication When faced with the task of selecting a person to whom to dedicate this yearbook, we, the editors, felt that there have been many in- dividuals who have been important parts of our lives; however, there is one who stood out among the rest. This person is Dr. Todd D. Flaherty. Doctor Flaherty is a well-respected individual in our school system. As Principal, he is faced with many decisions and responsibilities which, either directly or indirectly, affect each and every student and faculty member at Narra- gansett Junior-Senior High School. Because this includes a great number of people, one would not expect any one person to be able to recognize each person as an individual. He has proven this to be untrue and has shown his interest to extend far beyond his office. So, in order to thank him for his time and endless effort, we would like to dedicate the 1988 Maritimes Yearbook to Dr. Todd D. Flaherty. 2 Dedication CONTENTS Title Page Dedication Mariner Log The Class Of 1988 Junior Prom Senior Superlatives Senior Sign-Off Underclassmen Administration Activities Sports Patrons MARINER LOG We. the class of 1988, bid you a fond farewell Through the years that we have grown and matured, there have been both good times and bad, victories and defeats, many smiles and few tears. The theme for the show was “Entertainment To- night,” as our hosts, Liz Mul- cahy and Dean Welschman, portrayed Mary Hart and John Tesh. They were charming as they kept the show flowing. Under the expert direction of Christine Mancuso, Cindy Gowen, and Jason Laurie, the show took off with few, if any, flaws. Among the audiences’ favorites were Myja Thibault and his song entitled: “In- House Blues,” Kerry Reardon, Steve Dillon, Mark Wholey, and Hollie Stillwell in “Jests, “The Softe Parade,” and the Junior Class Act. According to everyone in- volved, the show was one of the best ever at NHS. Com- pliments are extended to the cast, stage crew, the lighting crew, the directors, and of course, Mr. Quinn for his help with our class. IBvjTERTAINnt ' HT SHOW In October of this year, the classes competed for the title of Most Spirited Class.” This year we had ‘‘back- wards day,” “Pajama day,” “Toga Day,” and of course, “Red and White Day.” Each day, the classes were given points according to how spir- ited they were. On Friday of Spirit Week, the students and faculty held a barbecue and competed in games, such as the relay, the egg-toss, the balloon-pop, the marshmal- low-eating contest, and the tug-of-war. When the points were appropriated and add- ed up, the Seniors were de- clared to be the “Most Spir- ited Class.” The week ended with the traditional bonfire held on Canonchet Beach. 100 Spirit Week SPIRIT Spirit Week 101 HOMECOMING After a fun-filled Spirit Week, the Narragansett Mariners defeated Shea High School in the traditional Homecoming Game. At half-time, the classes displayed their floats under the theme of “Childhood.” The Freshman float was a classic representation of Cinderella at the Ball. Following that, the Sophomores showed us the characters of “The Flintstones.” Then the Juniors displayed the “Wizard of Oz,” with everyone from Dorothy to the Wicked Witch. Finally, the Senior class brought the game, “Mousetrap” to life. The Junior class won the float competition, and then it was time to crown the Homecoming Queen. The Homecoming Court consisted of freshman Melissa Malley and her escort Ryan McGill, sophomore Heather Mal- ley and her escort Kevin Dunn, junior Beth Jarvis and her escort Ross Gilardi, and the three seniors, Julie DiSanto and her escort Steve McKendry, Katie McKenna and her escort Todd Gill, and Moira McKenna and her escort Ken Davis. Katie was crowned this year’s Homecoming Queen. That night, the Homecoming Dance was held: a perfect way to end the day. 102 Homecoming Homecoming 103 THE SADIE HAWKINS DAY DANCE The fifth annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, sponsored by the Junior class, was held on December 4, 1987. Fol- lowing tradition, the girls asked the guys to accompany them to the dance. The cou- ples even dressed for the oc- casion in straw hats, overalls, and plaid shirts. Everyone danced or got their pictures taken until the minister, Myja Thibault, was ready, and then the marriage proposals began. Some people got mar- ried as many as two, three, or four times. All in all, it was a great evening, and one that’s looked forward to all year. 104 Sadie Hawkins Dance THE SNO-BALL DANCE On January 9, 1988, the annual Sno-Ball Dance was held. The week before, each class voted on their repre- sentatives for the court. The court consisted of freshman Beth Fagan and her escort Steven Dunn, sophomore Ka- tie Sullivan and her escort Darren Flynn, junior Kristin Durfee and her escort Scott Vellone and the three seniors Christine Mancuso, Katie McKenna, and Moira McKen- na, and their escorts Greg Souza, Andy Carr, and Steve Holland, respectively. Beth Fagan became this year’s Sno-Ball Queen by the pick of the rose. Sno-Ball Dance 105 DONKEY BASKETBALL 106 Donkey Basketball Last year, on March 11, 1987, the third annual Don- key Basketball Game was held. The event was spon- sored by the Senior Class Council to raise money for the Senior Prom. The teams, Freshmen and Sophomores (combined). Juniors, Seniors, and Faculty, all completed for First Place. When it was all over, the Seniors had cap- tured the prize. Mr. Poirier was known for various aspects of his life. At home, he was a caring husband and father, and at school, he was not only a dedicated teacher and coach, but also a loyal and trusted friend to many. He was loved and respected by all who knew him, and he will not be forgotten. 140 Dedication 142 Advertisements LOOK TO THE FUTURE BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 1988 THE NARRAGANSETT DEMOCRATIC TOWN COMMITTEE The Village £ Inn _ HOTEL CONFERENCE CENTER at Narragansett Pier (formerly Durfees) A 60 Room Resort Inn On the Ocean Many rooms offer a spectacular view of Narragansett Bay and Newport with private balconies Enjoy Our Indoor Swimming Pool Fine Dining at Spain Restaurant Special Conference, Midweek and Off Season Rates are Available For Reservations, Brochures call 1 -800-THE-PIER (ouisidc R.l.) or write: One Beach Street, Narragansett, Rl 02882 (401)783-6767 OPEN ALL YEAR CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1988 PIT PATIO PIER VILLAGE NARRAGANSETT, RI Advertisements 143 BEST OF LUCK CLASS OF 1988 FROM THE WAKEFIELD WATER CO.
