MARITIMES THE 1984 MARITIMES NARRAGANSETT HIGH SCHOOL NARRAGANSETT, RHODE ISLAND DEDICATION As our high school careers come to an end, we. The Class of 1984 are pleased to be known as a class that set trends, started new traditions and broke new ground. With that distinction in mind, we have chosen to dedicate our 1984 Maritimes to a man that we feel is of the same caliber. That man is Mr. Wayne Johnson. We dedicate this chronicle of our years at Narragansett to Mr. Johnson with a deep appreciation of his versatility and in recogni- tion of his many valuable contributions to both our school and its students. In his six years as the Student Council Advisor, Mr. Johnson has been both a co-worker and counselor to us. He has assisted us in every endeavor we have undertaken and participated in all of our major events. He has shared himself many times, including his chaperoning our many dances, the Junior Prom and the Spirit Week bonfire. His enthusiasm for life has taught us how to get the most out of living while striving to succeed. In short, he has been an inspiration to us all. It is therefore with great pride and honor, that we. The 1984 Senior Class of Narragansett High School, proudly dedicate the 1984 Maritimes to our friend and teacher, Mr. Wayne Johnson. JUNE 1984 MARITIMES N.H.S. ANNUAL A Letter From the Editor Attempting to sum up everything that has happened in our school over the past year is indeed a difficult task for anyone. Even harder still, is the task of capturing that very special quality that our senior class possesses. As editor of the Maritimes, I have gratefully accepted this challenge with the hope that I, with the help of others, can create for you a keepsake in which you may carry the fond memories of high school forever. I also wish that this yearbook will effectively cap- ture many of the unforgettable moments that our class has shared during our time here, at Nar- ragansett High School. In this position, I have been fortunate enough to be able to witness the growth and changes of this class in a unique and valuable perspective. Over the past four years, being a member of the Maritimes staff, I have grown to know many members of our class in both a social and personal manner, which has enabled me to more accurately illustrate their character in this book. I hope that you will find this annual to be a worthy reflection of our life and times here at Nar- ragansett High School. So, with this sentiment in mind, let this yearbook bear witness to the accomplishments and spirit of our seniors — The Class of 1984. Pride comes from knowing that one day in our lives we will all meet with success; which is our reward for the education we’ve gained personally and as a whole. How can we forget our Freshman year? There was the ex- citement of being in high school but also the hardship of trying to fit in with the upperclassmen. We were led by our President — Lori Bessacini, Vice-President — Stephanie Huckins, Secretary — Debbie Lindewall and our Treasurer — Julie Eldridge. Stephanie Huckins represented the Freshman Class that year during Homecoming and our float was recognized as one of the better ones. The Sophomore year was a success for us. Our leaders had not changed from the previous year, nor had our Homecoming representative. Among our activities were the pre-victory dance and the selling of Easter bunnies. Our Junior year was yet another milestone. There was ex- citement as we proudly showed off our class rings. The officers for that year were: President — Lori Bessacini, Vice-President — Stephanie Huckins, Treasurer — Joanne Carter, and Secretary — Kelley Nelson and Debbie Lindewall. For this The Class of 1984 Homecoming our representative was Lisa Bradley. We then had our Variety Show, directed by Gina Sauro and Wendy Broome. But the highlight was of course, the Junior Prom held at the Meadowbrook Inn. Now we are at the threshold of our future — Senior year. We've had the usual worries; SAT’s, research papers and col- lege. We’ve come to value our friendships and ourselves because in a few short months we will be considered alumni. To lead our final year, we had: President — Lori Bessacini, Vice- President Michael McGwin, Treasurer— Mark Casey, and Secretary — Debbie Lindewall and Donna Meehan. Because of all our hard work this Homecoming, we finally won the con- test for best float. How could we lose with Mike Owens as our Baby New Year? The Senior Prom will be held at the Dunes Club, as has been the tradition. We owe Mr. Dubilewski much graditude. Saying goodbye will be the hardest thing to do. All the smiles and all our tears will become a blur but those we’ve come to know will always remain a special part of our lives. The world now awaits us and somehow we’ll be prepared thanks to all the strength and love found within our class — the Class of 1984. “LOVE ME TOMORROW” Last year during Midterms while most of us were worrying about exams, our Junior Class Council was diligently preparing for the 1983 Junior Class Prom. As the months between January and May slipped away, our excite- ment about the coming event mounted. Tickets were purchased, dresses were bought, tuxedos were fitted and arrangements were made to borrow dad’s car. When Friday the thirteenth finally arrived, those of us who were superstitious feared our dreams of the perfect evening would be ruined by some unpredictable force. For- tunately, with the exception of a lit- tle rain, our night at the Meadowbrook Inn turned out to be a perfect affair filled with smiling, dancing and much picture taking. At Midnight, Lisa Bradley became Prom Queen when she chose the white rose. She then danced with her prom date, Russell DesGranges to our prom theme “Love Me Tomorrow” by Chicago. All too soon the final strains of the last song died away as our prom came to an end. However, the night was still young. Most of us rushed home to change and then headed to the post-prom party at the Coast Guard House. Hours more of dancing, laughing and movie watching brought our par- ty to a happy conclusion in the early hours of the morning. The memories made on that May evening will live vividly in the minds of all us who were there. As we the members of The Class of 1984 enter the final phases of our careers at Narragansett High School, we proudly recognize and thank Lori Bessacini for the fine job she has done as our class president. Lori’s effort as our leader during the last four years has helped our class to become one of the most successful in Narragansett High’s history. Our Senior Class Council consisted of many important people this year. Lori was joined by Vice-President Mike McGwin, Secretaries Debbie Lindewall and Donna Meehan, and Treasurer Mark Casey. This year, our major fundraiser was a magazine drive that raised enough money to get our class trip planning underway. Among our successes this year, we number our first place finish in the Homecoming Float Competition. As the year grows older, our class will become involved in a number of NHS Senior traditions. Among those activities will be the annual “Slave” auction and the Senior Prom which will be held on June 1st at the Dunes Club. 10 SENIOR DEDICATION When we, the Class of 1984, began our freshman year at Nar- ragansett High School, we were filled with hopes and dreams for the years ahead. The time we have spent together has passed quickly, and because of our successes we leave with many wonderful memories of goals set and realized. The achievements of our class could not have been reached without the guidance of our class ad- visor, Mr. Philip Dubilewski. “Mr. D.” has helped us through the organization of such events as the Variety Show, the Valentines Dance, the selling of chocolate bunnies and our Proms. It is rare that one finds a man so devoted to helping others. Therefore, to show our appreciation and respect for him, the Class of 1984 thanks Mr. Dubilewski for his support and confidence in us by dedicating the Senior Section of the Maritimes to him. Thanks Mr. D. Sincerely, The Class of ’84 RANDOM NOTES New Cheerleaders Revealed ▼ A fter a lengthy audi- ® tioning process, the final selections have been made for the elite 1984 Mariner Cheerleaders. T I n an alleged incident at the posh Junior Prom, Mike Owens, an up and coming young comedic talent, reportedly, (and repeatedly), sat on his date Tina Millen. Said a crushed Tina, “What’s a nice girl like me doing under a guy like this?” Miss Millen’s lawyers said of the case, “His, (Owen’s), behavior was simply inexcusable.” Said Owen’s lawyers, “We’re just going to sit on this one and let it all blow over.” And the winner is ... Besides hosting the gala event, Russ also walked away with three awards of his own for Best Actor in a comedy series, Best Direction of a comedy series, and Best Screenplay in a comedy series. Said Russ, “It was nothing less than I deserved ...” Touche. Too much of a good thing? Quinn faces sleep suit? Narragansett High School student Jill McEneaney was recently spotted dozing with her teddy bear during the homeroom period. It was reported that the slumbering Miss McEneaney managed to sleep through the entire day’s class schedule before she was finally awakened by a night custodian later that evening. When interviewed the next day, the flustered young lady revealed that a certain Social Studies teacher, a Mr. Quinn, had assigned an unusually large amount of homework the previous night, forcing the hapless young lady to remain awake the entire night to complete it. A Before an audience of 18,000 screaming fans, Mariner defensive back Rob Sweet was publicly shorn of his world famous locks. The golden-brown tresses made famous by Sweet’s commer- cials for Flex Shampoo, were later auctioned off to the highest bidder for an estimated $33,000. Profits from the auction went to the home for Disabled Jocks, where former coach Jim Zepp is said to have retired. Other items on the block were Dave Pezzullo’s 83 jersey and Teddy Sherman’s red and white bandana. Movie to be a cat — astrophe? Film star Frank Bates and his understudy Curt Niles were recently interviewed on the set of Bate’s new movie “Frisky Business”, in response to a rumor that Bates, in a contract dispute with producers, didn’t intend to complete the fiim. When asked if this gossip were true. Bates simply replied that “the movie is really becoming a drag! It’s tough work- ing opposite a mangy cat ... I’m afraid that il will ruin my Hollywood reputation.” Curt Niles, the promising “second” for the part, appears to be pleased about this situation. When asked if he would like to become a star, the young actor replied, “It’ll really do me good. I’ve got nothin’ against working with cats. And besides . . . the waves out here arc totally radical!” The dashing Mr. Bates was then asked if he was just “cop- ping out” of the film because he would be required to work with over 45 different felines, but the actor just replied, “sometimes ya just gotta say, “Pass the buck”. The team con- sisted of students from different grade levels and academic averages. In competition each student was quizzed on their individual knowledge of topics which ranged from U.S. History and English Grammar to Algebra and Trigonometry. Although the team did not win the state championship, they performed well. Junior Donna Boudrea brought distinction and honor to the Narragansett team when she was awarded a silver medal for excellence in mathematics. The team was coached by Mrs. Sheila Zompa. Project Close-Up Project Close-Up is a week long program which takes eligible students from grades eleven and twelve to our nation's capital for a unique combination of touring and learning. Students spend five nights and six days in Washington D.C. ex- changing and expressing their views on current issues with some of the nation’s top leaders. While students arc in Washington, they are housed in hotels with students from numerous other high schools from around the country who are also par- ticipating in the program. This show, led by Gina Sauro and Mr. Dubilewski, was a highly successful event enjoyed by all. Many of 1983’s juniors actively participated in the performance as well as numerous underclassmen. Most memorable was the surprising “Kazoo Debut” by NHS’s newest budding talents — our very own teachers! Greg Rundlett and Stephanie Silvestri were the show’s Masters of Ceremonies, and posed as Broadway directors trying out new talent. Many acts which highlighted the show included the “Dudes Dukane, “American Pie” by Bob Fraliegh and a skit entitled “This Is Your Life Mr. McCarthy,” which featured Mike McGwin as our own Fearless leader. The show’s finale included the spectacular teacher’s act and concluded with the song “Almost On Broadway” which was set to the tune of Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” The 1983 Junior Variety Show was an exciting event indeed, and shall always remain fondly in the hearts of those who performed, in the event as well as those who attended it. BROADWAY!!” “PUTTIN’ ON This year's junior class has really been “Puttin' on the Ritz.” That is the theme of this year's variety show, which was presented on Feb. 2 and 4. The junior class has been planning this year’s show for many months now. Under the direction of Paul lacono and Trish Hadfield, the variety show got off to a good start. The show had been very carefully thought out and organiz- ed right down to the rehearsal schedule through the planning of all the acts. The evening opened with “Puttin' on the Ritz” set in the I920’s. The se- cond half of the show featured the modern way of “Puttin' on the Ritz.” The variety show had a substantial amount of musical and dance acts. The musical side of the show included a song and dance number performed by the senior high choir and some original pieces by Charles Aucott and his band. Among the dance numbers was a dance performed to the music from “Flashdance” and a break-dancing number. “Puttin' on the Ritz” was an exciting show that reflected all the hard work put into it. It was a great success, both as an enjoyable evening of entertain- ment and as a tremendous fundraiser for the junior class. — Jen Griffin ‘Let’s Groove Tonight' High Tide’s Lead Singer “Charlie” THE RITZ” “WE SING THIS SONG TO YOU.” This year the Choir had a very memorable year. They spent many long hours practicing to perform for the year to come. They performed at a Christmas concert, which turned out very well. They also tried their hand at a dance routine performed in the junior class variety show. Under the direction of Mr. Edward DeFusco the choir entertained many of us with their endless talent. Each year the band combines with South Kingstown to perform at half-time show at the Thanksgiving Day game. The concert band and jazz band spent the year performing at various events such as the Christmas Con- cert and also the Junior variety show. Under the direction of Mr. Cifelli, both the Concert band and the Jazz band had a very entertaining year. Senior Editor — Erin Farrell Sports Editor — Correne Houston Features Editor — Renee Conley Underclassmen Editor — Alison Falk This year the process of producing the Maritimes was changed. Under the leadership of our new advisor Mr. Thomas Quinn and Editor-in-chief Stephanie Silvestri, a small group of senior high students undertook the challenge of creating the best yearbook in NHS history. In August our staff met for the first time. Among our first order of business was the selection of section editors who would be responsible for overseeing every aspect of production for their particular part of the book. Each of the individuals pictured on these pages worked for weeks and months on perfecting a section or helping finance the yearbook. Overcoming numerous difficulties, we believe that we have successfully completed an attractive and well organized yearbook which accurately captures the memories and happenings of the 1983-1984 school year and we hope you will agree! 98 Business Manager — Scott McEneaney Asst. The toil, the pain, the agony, All have I felt for you. Let my words How gently As I bid my final adieu. Now that it is all over My love for you remains But all good things must change. Why do I feel so bitter? Is it because of the other man Who for so long I have trailed. But I make no excuses Their love for you was true. But no one could have loved you. As 1 did and still do You’ve given me many virtues, There has been good and There’s been bad, l_ Remembering those Friday nights Only makes me sped. I've seen you actcompassionate. I’ve also seen you cruel. I’ve seen you give rewards to some Who’ve broken every rule. Many times I’ve damned you. Many times I’ve cried. I thank the Lord, my God For reminding me that I’ve tried. Your charisma held me spellbound. I gave you everything. I allowed myself to be battered And beaten Driven to the ground. Looking past to present. My life goes through my mind.
