A MESSAGE FROM: Dr. Holland AND: To the Class of 1983: I would like to extend my best wishes to the 1983 graduating class as you leave our red carpeted corridors at Narragansett High for the last time. As you look back many years from now and read passages and look at pictures from this yearbook hopefully you will have pleasant memories of your years as a high school student — times that were filled with fun and excite- ment. good friends, and limited responsibilities. As you reflect back on your secondary education, however, I would ask you to look a little further at a few other things. Ask yourself how Narragansett High School contributed to your growth and development. What role did the school play in helping prepare you “to make a living?” Did the school teach you how to think more critically, creatively and productively? Did it help teach you how to live?” Did it lay the foundation for later learnings? It is my hope that you will give positive responses to these questions and that Narragansett High School will get high grades on the report card you keep on our school for life. For after all. our primary function as educators is to help you achieve your maximum potential and lead happy and productive lives. Hopefully. Narragansett High has played a significant role in contributing to that end. Sincerely, William R. Holland. Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Mr. McCarthy Dear Graduates: June, 1983, marks the end of your school career. It also is the beginning of many new ex- periences for you. Whether you will be going on to college, serving in the military or going directly to work, many opportunities will present themselves to you. It is my hope that you will wisely take the right opportunity to make your life personally suc- cessful and at the same time be positively con- tributing to society. With best wishes and hope for your future, I say farewell. Sincerely, Jerome R. McCarthy Principal »»

A BIT OF ADVICE FROM Mr. Flaherty Dear Class of 1983: It is with a sense of nostalgia that I bid farewell to the class of 1983, but here’s hoping that lives of excitement and good fortune await all of you. Hopefully Narragansett High School has provid- ed you with meaningful and positive experiences that will sustain you through the difficult challenges that lie ahead. As an educator, I am proud of what you have accomplished collectively as a class. Continue to set high goals for yourself and work diligently to fulfill your career plans. Sincerely, Todd D. Flaherty Assistant Principal AND: Mr. Allaire Dear Seniors, Our school does not have a motto. If I could sug- gest one, it might be Plus Est En Vous (You’ve Got More In You Than You Think), a saying found long ago on the wall of a Belgian church. 1 suggest this motto to you because in many ways you will now become your own teachers and will have to rely on inner strengths and insights in your daily living and learning. I hope these strengths could be convictions such as “Accept yourself as you are . .. Stand on your own two feet... Be not divided in yourself... Learn how to be free ... Learn how not to be busy ... Know that the world needs you .. And with these may you have the power to effect what you have recognized to be right, “despite hard- ships, despite dangers, despite inner skepticism, despite boredom, despite mockery from the world, despite emotion of the moment,” as my favorite teacher once said. If you do, the view from the mountain top will be superb, wait and see. Peace and all good things. Maurice R. Allaire Director of Guidance 5
