MARITIMES Volume VII 1983 Narragansett High School Narragansett, Rhode Island 'hanging Currents, Changing Times . . . We are all MARINERS, sailors of the open sea around us, plotting a course for the future. Day by day we change with each new tide. Our minds are filled with knowledge opening doorways inside. Strong dedication leads us through. Red and white signals spirit and pride, together we cheer. Acquaintances become companions as we stand side by side, sharing our lives. Over the years we grow with each new discovery and every old mistake. The time we spend is long. There are smiles and tears, but the echoes of laughter remain. The halls are quiet as we walk away. We take with us memories of our first days, once novel and challenging, which now seem like a second home. We have seen each other change, and with guidance, always come out on top. Fondly looking back, we know what we have gained is irreplaceable. The future holds a challenge, which we have faced once before, but we now face it with goals and dreams that are within our reach. . . . It is with sincere respect that the class of 1983 dedicates this book to Mr. Maurice Allaire. As a member of the Guidance Department, he devotes much of his time to seniors and their con- cerns. He has helped us through SAT’s. scholar- ships and college applications. He has helped us make our decisions about careers, universities and majors. No matter how complicated this all seemed to us. and no matter how many questions we had, Mr. Allaire was always there with a simple solution and a reassuring word. It is because of all this that he has not only been a counselor to us but a friend in the truest sense of the word. There is simply no other way to express the gratitude we feel. Mr. Allaire, the class of ’83 leaves you our yearbook and our thanks!!! CONTENTS STUDENTS FACULTY ACTIVITIES SPORTS POTPOURRI SPONSORS A MESSAGE FROM: Dr. Holland AND: To the Class of 1983: I would like to extend my best wishes to the 1983 graduating class as you leave our red carpeted corridors at Narragansett High for the last time. As you look back many years from now and read passages and look at pictures from this yearbook hopefully you will have pleasant memories of your years as a high school student — times that were filled with fun and excite- ment. good friends, and limited responsibilities. As you reflect back on your secondary education, however, I would ask you to look a little further at a few other things. Ask yourself how Narragansett High School contributed to your growth and development. What role did the school play in helping prepare you “to make a living?” Did the school teach you how to think more critically, creatively and productively? Did it help teach you how to live?” Did it lay the foundation for later learnings? It is my hope that you will give positive responses to these questions and that Narragansett High School will get high grades on the report card you keep on our school for life. For after all. our primary function as educators is to help you achieve your maximum potential and lead happy and productive lives. Hopefully. Narragansett High has played a significant role in contributing to that end. Sincerely, William R. Holland. Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Mr. McCarthy Dear Graduates: June, 1983, marks the end of your school career. It also is the beginning of many new ex- periences for you. Whether you will be going on to college, serving in the military or going directly to work, many opportunities will present themselves to you. It is my hope that you will wisely take the right opportunity to make your life personally suc- cessful and at the same time be positively con- tributing to society. With best wishes and hope for your future, I say farewell. Sincerely, Jerome R. McCarthy Principal A BIT OF ADVICE FROM Mr. Flaherty Dear Class of 1983: It is with a sense of nostalgia that I bid farewell to the class of 1983, but here’s hoping that lives of excitement and good fortune await all of you. Hopefully Narragansett High School has provid- ed you with meaningful and positive experiences that will sustain you through the difficult challenges that lie ahead. As an educator, I am proud of what you have accomplished collectively as a class. Continue to set high goals for yourself and work diligently to fulfill your career plans. Sincerely, Todd D. Flaherty Assistant Principal AND: Mr. Allaire Dear Seniors, Our school does not have a motto. If I could sug- gest one, it might be Plus Est En Vous (You’ve Got More In You Than You Think), a saying found long ago on the wall of a Belgian church. 1 suggest this motto to you because in many ways you will now become your own teachers and will have to rely on inner strengths and insights in your daily living and learning. I hope these strengths could be convictions such as “Accept yourself as you are . .. Stand on your own two feet... Be not divided in yourself... Learn how to be free ... Learn how not to be busy ... Know that the world needs you .. And with these may you have the power to effect what you have recognized to be right, “despite hard- ships, despite dangers, despite inner skepticism, despite boredom, despite mockery from the world, despite emotion of the moment,” as my favorite teacher once said. If you do, the view from the mountain top will be superb, wait and see. Peace and all good things. Maurice R. Allaire Director of Guidance 5 MARINER LOG ’83 Beginning our Freshman year with the guidance of Ms. Norlund and Mrs. Capalbo and the leadership of Presi- dent Andy Nota, and Vice Presidents Michelle Judge and Renee Archam- bault we soon overcame our fears and anxieties of what high school was to bring. And through the dances and bake sales we marched ourselves right into our Sophomore year with Moni- que Savioe representing our class for the second year at the Homecoming and Andy Nota and Tom Cronin as President and Vice President. Though it seems only a very short time ago we were then just underclassmen with what seemed like forever till gradua- tion ahead of us. Well, our Junior year began and we elected President Sharon Younkin and Vice President Brad Cuppels to lead us. It was the year when Erin McKen- na was chosen to represent us on the Homecoming “Hayride.” And who will forget the variety show, or the other fund raisers for our Junior Prom, when Judy Catougno was crowned queen among the court of Renee Ar- chambault, Karen Wronoski, Kris lem- ma, Erin McKenna, Lisa Valentino, and Mari Denelle, the night we danced to Outrage at the Seamen’s Inn in Mystic, Connecticut. 6 Then the big year began and we were honored with THE SENIOR I.D.’s and the privileges that went with them. With our football team winning Homecoming day, a queen was chosen from the class representatives Kris lemma, Connie Beck, and Judy Catougno. Mr. McCarthy crowned Kris during halftime, and again our float went unawarded. Sharon and Brad again took leader- ship, and the magazine drive was the beginning of the fund raisers for the an- ticipated night in June. But let us remember as we are com- pleting our college requirements, S.A.T.’s, and financial aid forms, we are also completing a short time in our lives in which we have developed the most. Let us leave with memories still warm in our hearts and with the hope of success and dreams come true for all of us, THE CLASS OF ’83. 7 Renee Archambai Leah Arnold John Avt’lla lall Deitrick Denise Duffy Will Durfee Robbie Ells Connie Frank E ble rerdinani BAgFarrare ivona Scott Camp Michael Campb’a Rhonda parlone Chris Carlson Lisa Ca; Goodrij yKearney KeAahan dudy.|CatiLidgpo Deborah Chalifoux Tjn Champlin Peter Clays Maribeth Como ioukas Marion dorr Carl Cotti, Tom CrAnin Bradd Q±ppel: Ed Mancini Carla Manci Chris Maror Bru Andyf ota Bob Nottage Maureen O’Donnell limOldha n j Tom Opishinski Kevin Palumbo. It was held at the Seamen’s Inn in Connecticut on a beautiful spring evening, May 7, 1982. Preparation for the night brought ner- vousness and anticipation. Finally, after worrying about how everyone looked, the evening began. The band “OUTRAGE” provided musical entertainment. Everyone proceeded to dance the night away, with “ALL OF MY LOVE” by Led Zepplin as our prom theme. After, the prom parties were abundant and well at- tended in and around town. With Mr. Johnson as their advisor, the student council began the year with success. In September the council hosted the annual “Welcome Back Dance” which proved to be invaluable in raising school spirit. In December the student council held their first roller-skate-a-thon in order to raise money for the American Heart Fund. Narragansett High School is indebted to the student council for its fine efforts in the past, present and future. GROUP PICTURE — First Row: Vicky, Beth, Jamie, Mari, Kim, Stacey, Sue, Kerri. With our new advisor, Mr. Horwitz and the addition of many new staff members, our first couple of weeks were a little awkward. As time went on we finally got organized (well — sort of organized) and together we coped with the day-to-day problems and pressures that the yearbook presented. Our goal this year was to make our book uni- que. It is our feeling that this book should not be a reflection of past graduating classes but that it should belong totally to the class of 1983!!! With the help of Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Horwitz and countless other staff members we have reached our goal. When we completed our work in March we realized that we had gained knowledge and developed friendships that would last far beyond our high school years. Our thanks to everyone who has contributed to this book!!! Karen Seamans Editor Stephanie Silvestri Asst. Editor 79 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY In May of 1982, nine talented students were inducted into the Mariner Chapter of the National Honor Society. These students were chosen for their outstanding academic abilities as well as their participation in extracurricular activities. Front Row: Andrea. Karen, Cathy, Kim, Sharon. Several seniors donated a lot of time and effort working in the cafeteria to raise money for the annual trip to our Nation’s Capitol. This week is referred to as Spirit Week; a time where you can put all those old clothes that you’ve packed away to use. This year, Spirit Week consisted of Hat, Tie and Button Day, Clash Day, Hawaiian Day, New Wave Day and Red and White Day. Students were given prizes for outstanding costumes, but the judging was difficult because there were so many to pick from. Spirit Week is always a lot of fun, so next year when Homecoming approaches, get ready to show your SPIRIT!! The members of the Homecoming Court were: Jennifer Davey, Lisa Bradley, Connie Beck, Kris lemma, Judy Catuogno, and Jennife Amoroso. As Spirit Week activities came to a close, Homecoming began. The pep rally got everybody “psyched” as we rolled on to a 9-0 victory over Shea. Kris lemma, escorted by Chris Varrecchione, was chosen as our Homecoming Queen. The day ended with the traditional “Homecoming Dance.” It was a hit as the gym was packed with students and alumni. We give our thanks to the Student Council for making our sixth Homecoming memorable. The Sophomores received a plaque, as their float, “Kai’s Laundry,” was selected by the alumni. This record enabled them to compete in the state competition finals. Leading the Mariners was Billy Harrison, scoring over 40 goals. Willis Kim, the goalie, also led the Mariners with outstanding play in the net. Although the team will be losing 6 seniors, they are looking forward to next year. COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR TEAM!!! It is a relatively new team, and they are indeed trying their best and coming closer to success. The team’s record for this season holds hope for next year: three victories — two over West Warwick, one over East Greenwich, and losses to East Greenwich, North Kingstown, Coventry, and Warwick Vets. Mariner 9 Hold Their Own!! The Mariners baseball team had a fine season last year but fell short of the playoffs in a tough division race. Glenn Gardiner, Senior pitcher, was named most valuable player while Junior David Ricci and Freshman Tom Farrell were chosen for the All Division Team. Ricci (Right) led the team in batting with an average of 315. The Mariners are looking forward toward another exciting season with six starters returning. Pictured: From L to R: R. Oshberg, P. The Marinettes under the direction of head coach Dave Poirier capped off a 10-2 season with the Rhode Island State title. On the way to the finals the Marinettes squeezed out victories over Ponaganset 1-0, Mt. St. Charles 2-1 and Pilgrim 3-2 in an exciting 11 inning semi-final game. In finals action the Marinettes dropped the first game to the Warwick Canes 4-3 but rallied behind the skillful pitching of Sharon Younkin. The Canes remained scoreless in the last two games, 3-0 and 5-0, giving the Mariners their second State Championship!! ZZIT7T 1 ‘nR’ Fro ‘= T Cook, R. Archambault, J. Eldridge, A. Poirier, L.
