“
1 Dedication On behalf of the student body, the Maritimes staff dedicates the 1980 yearbook to a teacher who has been unparalleled in demonstrating the spirit and character of Narragansett. This dedication is a tribute to a unique indi- vidual whose roots are deeply embed- ded in Narragansett's past and pres- ent. She was educated through the Narragansett and South Kingstown school systems, and continued her educational development at the Uni- versity of Rhode Island. Mrs. Maxine Mason-Rose is as effervescent as the ocean and as much a part of Narragan- sett as The Towers.” The strength of her tenderness and warmth for her stu- dents is constantly shown through their love for her. Mrs. Rose is sincere in her dedication to teaching and in her class, all feel welcomed and are inspired to do their best. Besides being a superb teacher, Mrs. Rose is also an avid bicyclist and history buff. She has donated much of her time to researching South County lore and sharing it with others. For these and all the varied contrib- utions she has given her students, we proudly dedicate this book to you Champ.” The Directors address the Stars Dear Graduates: Congratulations on achieving one of the most important goals in your lives! As you commence your adult years, I hope that when you reflect on your experience at Narra- gansett High School you will find that it prepared you for the many and diverse decisions you will face relating to life and careers. It is impossible now for any of us to know what the world will be like when you assume roles similar to those of your parents and teachers. It is certain, however, that you will be part of the group of adults providing the leadership as it enters the twenty-first century. The technology of that time will be quite different than today but people will be the same. I hope you continue to develop values that demonstrate respect and concern for the dignity of the individual in all your pursuits. Best wishes for the future Sincerely, jerome r McCarthy Principal Mr. McCarthy, Principal mi Mr. Flaherty, Assistant Principal MR. TODD D. FLAHERTY Assistant Principal Dear Graduates: Let me offer my sincere congratulations to you on the successful completion of your high school career Hope- fully, your years at Narragansett High School have been ful- filling ones and have materially contributed to your growth in positive and rewarding ways. We are proud of you and your accomplishments and thank you for helping our new high school achieve its current level of excellence, espe- cially in its formative years. As the graduating class of 1980 you will be facing a new decade with new challenges and hopes. Go forward with confidence, seeking new knowledge, skills and ideas while at the same time respecting the opinions of others. Learn the difference between schooling and education. Realize that asking for guidance is a sign of strength and not weakness. And finally, may you lead lives that enrich the lives of others. Best wishes, WILLIAM R. HOLLAND Superintendent of Schools Dr. Holland, Superintendent 7 8 Though these past years have been filled with memories, many more await us. And even if this marks an end, it is also a great beginning. For as we separate and start anew, we have these cherished memories to lean on. by Kelley Cuppels SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL 10 'What do you mean there's no film in the camera?'' Our first year as high school students was under the direction of Mrs. Johnson as our advi- sor. We elected an excellent starring cast: Chace Loomis, Pres.; Pat Monteith, VP; Sue Zwick, Secretary and Glen Babich, Treasurer. We began our fundraising activities and held a successful dance for grades 7-12. In the spring, armed with soapy sponges and an ample water supply, we held a profitable carwash. TAKE TWO: Sophomore year! Our second year featured Mrs. Cicil- line as advisor and a supporting cast of Sue Zwick, Pres.; Tracy Brownell, VP; Terry Podedworny, Secre- tary and David Nota, Treasurer. This year, we started a tradition with Homecoming and Debbie Dowdell as our representative. We also held a candy sale which delighted the student body. At our first Valentine's Day Dance, we sold carnations and took portraits. TAKE THREE: Junior year! For the last time, we experienced a change in the director’s chair. Mr. Anderson volun- teered to advise our class, and the following cast helped with set direction Sue Zwick, Pres.; David Nota, VP; Cindy Pater, Secretary and Pat Monteith, Treasurer. We had a repeat performance of our candy sale and Valentine's Dance which proved well worth- HISTORY while. Some of our first run events included the Sadie Hawkins dance, our class rings, and our Variety Show, Potpourri 79”. The main event was in May ... The Junior Prom! Liisa Halberg was crowned queen at the oceanside Green Inn to make it a perfect evening. TAKE FOUR: Senior year! The lights were finally on us as we accepted our center stage position. Mr. Anderson, still in the director's chair, was supported by Steve Bea- trice, Pres.; Terry Podedworny, VP; Kerry Casey, Sec- retary and Chase Loomis, Treasurer. In September, we sold seat cushions with the Yearbook staff to comfort fans on the new bleachers. At Homecoming, the court was Jane Ranieri, Ruth Aldrich and Marcie Turgeon. The day climaxed when Ruth was crowned queen and the Mariners whipped the Spartans of Situate. Later in the year, Slave Day provided laughs for the under- classmen while we fortified our treasury. Our Senior Prom is being planned for a night in May, and will surely be the hit of the year. Graduation, tentatively set for June 10, will be a rerun of memories and a preview of things to come. We have been a close class and will surely miss each other. Certain that we have worked together to make our years at Narragansett High the best, we leave with confidence. We the Class of 1980, say Good-bye... 13 SENIOR DEDICATION When the Class of '80 began its Junior year, it was without an advisor. Soon after an application for the position had been submitted. It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Mr. Robert Anderson as our advisor for the next two years. Advising a strongly motivated class was not an easy task, and Mr. Anderson has proven to be as determined as the class. He has in many ways provided our class with the strong reputation of being very productive. Mr. Anderson has devoted his time and effort to the success of our class. Therefore, it is with fondness, respect, and our utmost appreciation that we dedicate the Senior Section of the yearbook to Robert Otto Anderson. 15 Introducing... 16 THE STARS The Graduating Class off Nineteen Eighty ■cf opLn £[iza.tj£.tfi c j-PAxiafi Nothing is impossible to a willing heart because laughter is the chorus of conversation, and dreams make the world go round.” c HAzicfi When we ponder over the happy memories of our past, we wish to reach our future so we may be able to create mem- ories that are worth remember- ing someday. dl [ax(z UpLomai. c f-mznA [e.nn Ba jicfi Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. £ 2 c f-. However, through the leadership of Mr. Johnson as their advisor and through the support of all the student groups and organiza- tions, the Student Council began the year with suc- cess. In September, the Student Council hosted the annual “Welcome Back Dance which proved to be invaluable in raising school spirit. In October, officers, whose responsibility it was to guide the meetings and head the council, were elected. The elections resulted in the appointments of David Nota, President; Terry Podedworny, Vice-Presi- dent; Rachel Hoyt, Treasurer; Mari Denelle, Recording Secretary; and Michelle Cohen, Corresponding Secre- tary. Once committees were formed, Student Council took over responsibility for a variety of school events. The guiding of guests around the school on three dif- ferent occasions, the instituting of new dance policies, the sponsoring of Homecoming, dances, and assem- blies were events which the Student Council organ- ized. Through events such as these, Pier Pride was increased and flourished. Student Council looks forward to the continuation of such traditional events as the “Cerebral Palsy rock-a- thon and the improvement of the school for future years. Narragansett High School is indebted to the Student Council for its fine efforts in the past, present, and future. 92 Council Members: Ruth Aldrich, Robert Allen, Steve Beatrice, Linda Campbell, Jane Carter, Kerry Casey, Michelle Cohen, Doris Constantinedes, JoAnne DeCota, Mari Denelle, Scott Denelle, Mic- helle Dodge, Nancy Dodge, Doreen Har- dink, Rachel Hoyt, Chace Loomis, Larry Monahan, Dave Nota, Beth O’Neill, Cindy Pater, Roger Pearson, Terry Poded- worny, Ron Smith, Sherry Smith, Amy White, Sue Zwick. 93 Maritimes Staff Photographers: Mike Campbell, Willis Kim, Junius Kim, Peter Calo, Mike Webb; Missing: Judy P; thorp, Al Louzon. Excitement, laughter, and tears — these are the emotions which a yearbook staff survives in putting the book together. Laying out the pages of a yearbook is similar to putting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, and when all the pieces fit everyone is quite excited! Laughter is heard as the staff reviews the year's memories which are captured in the thousands of sorted pictures. Tears flow freely when a deadline has to be met. The Maritime’s staff of 1980 made many changes in this year's book. The book was increased in size, and the ad section was dou- bled, the paper was changed from '‘glossy to matte, and price was reduced. In addition, two co-advisors who were new to this field took on the responsibilities of reorganization and supervi- sion. Perhaps the biggest change was in the theme — the sea was abandoned and replaced with the theme of Movies. These pages are a result of the dedication, patience, and loyalty of a tremendous yearbook staff. 94 Staff: P McHenry, L. Campbell, L. Stearns, M Campbell, D. Simmons, R Carlone. E Scheer. D. The fifteen students were chosen on the basis of academic aver- ages and extracurricular participation. Along with the eight seniors inducted at that time, were seven juniors: Glenn Babich, Stephen Beatrice, Tracy Brownell, Linda Campbell, Kerry Casey, Beth O'Neill, and Roger Pearson. This year, as seniors, they worked as a group and helped out in the Learning Center as aides. Under the guidance of their advisor, Mrs. Pitocchi, they helped the underclassmen and hope to continue their efforts in the future. 96 ASSISTANTS Throughout the school there are students behind the scenes that are not always recognized. Their jobs vary from helping in the science labs, to delivering papers for the office, to putting books on the shelves of the library. They give up their free periods to help the faculty and staff, who don’t always have enough hands to do all the jobs that have to be done. The science department lab assistants are Amy Curhan, Mark Needham, John Florence, and Ralph Lataille. The office aides are Denise Crowe, Larry Monahan, Sharon Lindewall, Russ Carlone, Bob Martini, and John Carlone. Office aides not pictured are Amy Poirier, Pat McMahon, and Paul Sahagian. The library aides are Carol Salisbury, Suzanne Wilson, Lesley Buonanno, Steve Sliney, Donna Duffy (not pictured), Paul Steinhilber, and Patrick McMahon. Model Legislature is a program in which students from all over the state get their chance to run our government. It is a three day pro- gram in which students, acting as senators and representatives, attend committees and hear lobby- ists. On the last day they hold an actual assembly where bills are passed and debate is heated. This year's participants were: Advisor: Mr. Hilley Senator: Terry O'Neill Alternate: Suzanne Goos Representative: Doris Constantinedes Alternate: Amy White Pages: Michelle Cohen Mari Denelle Renee Archambault 98 Six students and their advisor, Mr. Brown, traveled to Washington D.C. with Project Close-Up from March 2nd to March 8th. The students visited some historical landmarks and attended sessions of the Supreme Court and the Legislature where they saw how the government operates. It was an exciting week-long learning experience that they will not soon forget. 99 Compass Staff The Compass, Narragansett High’s student newspaper is in its fifth year of continuous operation and publishes student and faculty articles, cartoons, poems, photos, and interesting news of our community. The new format reflects the modern objectives of a school publication and seeks to encourage the journalistic endeavors of the younger members of the school. The editorial staff of the paper is con- stantly looking for contributions!!! 100 Debate Club The Narragansett Debate Club this year consisted of Kristen Jor- dan, Joan Favoli, Lynn Dunning- ton, Maureen Grady and Robin Leather. The Club met faithfully each week under the direction of Mrs. Duggan. Literary Club This year’s first Literary Club was comprised of Joann Wilson, Karen Leeming, Lynn Dunning- ton, Mike Varrecchione, Jane Mohan, Leslie Buonanno, Pam Pearson, Beth Wilson, Robin Leather, Steven Sliney, and Sharon Fay. Working under Mrs. Brown, the major goal was to publish a magazine. 101 i 102 Our Narragansett High School drama club re- established itself this year with a new crew and advisor. The advisor, Miss Leslie Flynn, took charge and the outcome of our first play demonstrated her great ability. The play TOGA, TOGA, TOGA was a terrific success. VICTORIA'S HOUSE, our second production, was equally successful. Drama Club Art Park Art Park. What is it? Art Park is a total day for the ARTS. We try to promote the arts and have every department contribute in some way. The school turns into a fair and the public is invited. The past year we had a professional jazz group perform, a rock band, art display and sales, plant sales, bake sales, Narragansett Indians, continuous film and cartoons, kites, karate demonstra- tions, Blue Moon entertainment, track and field events, music department choir. The student is left on his own. The day is a big success. 104 Senior High Honors SENIOR CLASS HIGH HONORS TRACY BROWNELL AMYCURHAN PATRICIA MONTEITH HONORS ROBIN ALDRICH RUTH ALDRICH GLENN BABICH STEPHEN BEATRICE ELIZABETH BECKER DAVE BELLINO SCOTT BURNS KERRY CASEY MICHAEL CASEY MARIBETH CROOK KELLY CUPPELS SCOTT DENELLE LYNNE DUNNINGTON KAREN FELICE LUSA HALLBERG TOM JANIS ANNE KEARNEY ROBIN LEATHER CHACE LOOMIS JANE MOHAN CODY MUNROE DAVE NOTA CYNTHIA PATER ROGER PEARSON THERESA PODEDWORNY JANE RANIERI — LISA ROONEY LYNN STEARNS MARGARET WILKENS PATRICIA WILKENS JOANNE WILSON NARRAGANSETT HIGH SCHOOL 2ND QUARTER HONORS JUNIOR CLASS SOPHOMORE CLASS FRESHMAN CLASS HIGH HONORS MICHELLE DODGE MAUREEN GRADY ANDREW LAWING HONORS MATTHE’ JEFFR JEFJ J JAI Tl DORIS CONST, KATHLI LORI KAPI JEFFRE PAULA MARCACCIA STEVEN MCCAFFREY RUTH MUELLER COLLEEN O’DONNELL TERRY O’NEILL LISA SCHAFFRON BARBARA SI HIGH HONORS PATRICIA ARCABELLA DEBRA BARSZCZ ...OY DODGE NNEGOOS HIGH HONORS DENISE DUFFY CATHERINE GOODRICH ANDREASAURO AMY SMOKER HONORS HONORS PEJER BLESStNQ ETER Bl JOSEPH COHEN VERNA DAWLEY A—JA ES ETTER'V. This record represents the Mariner's finest effort in Gansett's football history as they missed the class B small championship by only one game in a disappoint- ing loss to Warren. The Mariner Machine sported a wealth of football talent and placed eight members on the all-class teams. Receiving first team honors were seniors John Clays. All the girls played well as their record shows, and look forward to an exciting season next year, as well as the arrival of their new jackets. cn CD H ( ) O CO 138 The spring of 1979 proved to be a successful season for coach Roger Chase and the boys' ten- nis team. As proof of their effort, the team posted a polished 7-5 record. Representing the Mariners were co-captains John Averill and Glenn Babich. John was awarded the title of Most Valuable Player for 1979 not only for his contribution to the team record, but also for the sense of responsibil- ity he demonstrated throughout the season. The excellent coaching of Mr. Richard Adham, combined with the tremendous efforts of the girls, resulted in a very successful year. As a first year team, the girls surprised many with their outstanding abilities. They witnessed their only defeat when they traveled to Massa- chusetts to play Lunenburg High School. The team was led by Co-Captains Kerry Casey, Cindy Pater, and Kathy Holland in their victories. Ml 142 03 -Q Q) O O The Spring of 1979 brought many changes to Narragansett High School, including the coaching of the girls' volley- ball team. After a battle with the school committee to preserve the team, Debbie Ranaldi took on the job of coaching it. Throughout the season, everyone gained experience and learned the value of good sportsmanship. They all look forward to a prosperous season in 1980. Team members: Captain, J. Poirier, A. Sylvia, C. There were many new faces this year — with a lot of talent But for many it meant putting on the pressure'' to achieve starting positions. As the season prog- ressed — the girls learned to play together and were very enthusias- tic. With Mr. Poirier as their coach, the team showed great enthusiasm and spirit of competition. This year’s Seniors, Kerry Casey and Ruth Aid- rich, played their best and proved to be a great asset to their team. Many other great young players began this season and did well against their oppo- nents. After a slow start, the Marinettes eventually showed true potential by displaying their shooting abilities and skilled passing. We wish good luck to all of next year's team members. 145 05 £ Q) CO 05 CD 14H The Mariners compiled an outstanding 18-4 record for the 1979-1980 season The season had many highlights, but the victory which stands out in most of the players' minds is the game with Tiverton in which the Mariners won by one point (58- 57) The captains of the team were Mark Sprague. John Clays, and Ray Frade The team was led by seniors John Clays. Matt Thomas. Ray Frade. Kevin Holland. Mark Sprague, and Steve Beatrice. The season was the Mariners most successful since their entry into the league in 1975 A team is only as good as their bench, and to prove the point, the Mariner J.V.’s were 21-1 for the season. This J.V. team gives a bright future to the team for next year Post Season Honors John Clays — All Class 1 st team Ray Frade — All Class 2nd team 147 Jr. High Basketball This year the Jr High Mariners had one of the best sea- sons ever. Under expert coaching the teams came out with outstanding records and possible playoff spots. Highlighting the boys' season was a key victory over the favored Thompson by a score of fifty to twenty-five If there is any doubt whether or not the Senior High Mariners will have a strong team in the future, just take a look at the Junior High Mariners. 14!) 8 % This year the girls gymnastics team, although plagued by injury and illness, finished their season with a respectable 5-4 record. The Marinettes posted impressive victories over such teams as West Warwick, Rogers, and Hope. Strong individual efforts were turned in by Becky Foor and Rachel Hoyt, each having qualified for state championship competition. Rachel placed 10th with an outstanding score of 7.25 in the floor exercise in a field of 57 contestants. For a more complete listing of scores, please turn to page 152.
