Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1978 volume:

As is the function of a yearbook. Mari limes '78 will portray the greater influences on the lives of students. Yet we do not forget those who made it possible for us to prepare ourselves for the future in our new high school, and therefore we proudly dedicate this yearbook to John W. O'Brien. Mr. O’Brien graduated from LaSalle Academy, where he played football and was the goalie for the hockey team. Fol- lowing distinguished Army service in the European Theater during World War II, he resumed his education at Rhode Island College of Education, receiving his degree in 1950. While a teacher at North Providence High School, he earned his Master's degree at Rhode Island College, and con- tinued his doctoral studies at the University of Connecticut. After teaching mathematics at North Providence. Mr. O'Brien was principal at the Johnston (Vermont) high school until 1962, when he came to Narragansett as principal of the junior high. Leaving to be principal of South Kingstown's new junior high in 1964. Mr. O'Brien returned to become our Superintendent in 1966. Mr. O'Brien and his wife, Dorothy, live in North Provi- dence. They have two sons, Kevin and Robert. One of the most prestigious senior awards at graduation is the Neil E. O'Brien Memorial Award for the outstanding senior citizen- athlete. This award was established in memory of Mr. O'Brien's third son, who was killed in a tragic accident in 1975. Despite the fact that this was a difficult time for him, Mr. O'Brien continued to demonstrate his extraordinary dedi- cation to our school system. Mr. O'Brien has been instrumental to the orderly growth of this system. Under his guidance, the school building commit- tee was reactivated in 1966 to plan a much-needed addition to the Junior High. To help alleviate the classroom shortage, relocatable rooms were immediately obtained, and the pro- posed addition was completed in 1967. As we continued to grow, a second addition, housing Kindergarten and Grade One, was finished in 1973. He saw us through the opening of our new high school in 1975, and early in this year, still look- ing toward the future, he has recommended the construction of a new primary school. Even in this, his last year of service in Narragansett, Mr. O'Brien continues to strive toward achieving another long-sought goal: seeing our schools receive their first accreditation. It is fitting that as Mr. O'Brien completes his twelfth year as Superintendent, and the Class of '78 completes its twelfth year as Narragansett students, we gratefully and humbly acknowl- edge the dedication he has always shown toward us. SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL 25 fin c ffijizzcLation As seniors we are each going through the process of defining ourselves as individuals. As a class, we respect Mrs. Pitocchi for her many contributions to our lives. Those of us who enrolled in Research Paper will never forget the slightly harrowing yet ultimately rewarding experience of writing our first paper. Creative writing gave us new outlooks on the world and ourselves. Most of all. we have benefited from her keen interest in teaching and in her students; we have been touched by her unique style that impairs both knowledge and humor. Thus it is with great affection and respect that we say. Thank you. Mrs. Pitocchi (ICaii. of ' 8 CLASS As everyone knows, a Senior is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. However, a Senior has not always been a Senior . . . As the Class of '78, we began our first year in high school, and at the same time finished our last year at “Narragansett Junior High.” Joe D'Abrosca was our president and Mr. Brown, our advisor. That year the whole school was preparing to enter the NEW high school. Even though we were moving, we still had time for our Variety Show. As active members of the student body we helped to publish the first hard-cover yearbook in Narra- gansett, and the last one to be published at the junior high level. We also had our own school newspaper and a literary magazine — the Amulet. In 1975. we said “Good-bye to our old symbol, the Indian, and N.J.H. forever. As Sophomores, we welcomed back the Class of '77 and had the unique chance of being upperclassmen in only our second year of high school. Mrs. DeGrass was our advisor then, with Pam Delman being chosen as chairman of the council. We sponsored the only suc- cessful dance of the year. Remember our first “Spirit Week”! Then we began our Junior year, this time with Mrs. Vento as our advisor and Phil Benoit as chairman of the council. We ordered and received our class rings before Christ- mas — we were truly upperclassmen, now! We sponsored a really successful variety show — The Junior Jamboree which would not have gone on without the talented direction of Tracey Cronin. There were stars everywhere! And, don’t forget selling Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to everyone in sight! But being a Junior meant we were all looking forward to our first prom. After a lot of discussing and planning. May 27th finally arrived. We enjoyed our dinner at the Lighthouse Inn and the prom went until 1:00 a.m. to the music of Shine. Most of us couldn't wait for June to finally come but when it did. it meant saying “Good-bye to our friends — the Class of '77. We were sad but not so sad that we didn't take over “Senior Hall as our own the following day. HISTORY Summer went by quickly and September of our Senior year was finally here. We wel- comed back Mr. Brown as our advisor and elected Peggy Dowdell. Tracy Denelle, Leigh- Anne Zwick, Tammy Rose, Tracey Cronin, Mindy Goos, Jon Knight and John DeCubellis to our Senior Council, with John DeCubellis serving as chairman. “Homecoming was October 22 and the Alumni were welcomed back as the Mariners defeated the North Smithfield Norsemen 20-7. Tracy Denelle. Peggy Dowdell and Linda Nedwidek represented the Seniors on the Homecoming Court with Peggy being crowned as the Queen. Now. midway through the school term, we can definitely say that Our Senior Year is undoubtedly the best! Despite the SAT’s, Achievement Tests, and college applications, we find the time to revel in the many special activities that are seniors' traditions. The year will end with our long-awaited Senior Prom at the Quidnessett Country Club. The beautiful setting of the Club and the superb dinner will undoubtedly make the eve- ning one to be remembered. Finally, graduation will be upon us. As we receive our diplomas, it will be with a great deal of happiness and some tears. We have the future before us. but we will always cherish the warm memories of being members of the Class of 1978. 78 is GREAT! unoriam LfyaxCesn c f-. “Beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm depend on simplicity.” — Plato ‘Kathy {ZJxacs,ij S. For the first year that Narragansett participated in a league, the 76- 77 girls' volleyball team had a fairly successful year. The team was denied the advantage of home games because of problems with the size of the volleyball courts in the gym. The team lost many heartbreakers, losing in the last inning, or by one run. The highlight of the season came when the Mariners pulled the upset of the year by vanquishing a then-undefeated Chariho team. After 1977’s setback, however. Coach Christopher still has reason to be very opti- mistic about the 1978 season. Many of his starters will be returning, and in addition, there will be several new players coming up from the Junior High team, which had a very successful season in 1977. as you can see on the following page. Led by Coach Adham, the players compiled a very impressive record of 10 wins, 4 losses. The team ended the sea- son tied with Thomson to become co-champions in their division. In the state semi-finals against North Smithfield. they lost a real heartbreaker by the score of 5-4 in a single elimination tournament. Team members included E. Allen. P. Blessing, J. Bolster, B. Among other difficult moves, the Mariner Band gave a snappy rendition of the letter “N” and then “H, standing, of course, for Narragansett High. Marching on the football field is not their only talent, however. The band also marched in Narragansett's Veterans' Day parade, in the pouring rain, for which they were awarded $100.00 to be placed in their treasury.
