THE VARSITY FOOTBALL RECORD We concluded a brilliant string of eighteen straight wins, spanning three years and nineteen games, undefeated, before tasting defeat by a good Grass Lake team. That record follows: Our 54 season: C8 -0-OJ: 55 season Q8-0-OJ: 56 season: f4-3-lj. These forty-seven boys were primarily responsible for that undefeated string in 54-55, and the first two games in 56. The 54 Seniors are as follows: Gerald Brown-Honorable Mention, Jim Franklin-All County, Don Green, Bob Hammond-Honorable Mention, Harvey Henning-All County, Don Hoyt-Honorable Mention, Duane Iverson-All County, Delbert Parkinson-All County, Kaye Phillips, Paul Randolph. The 55 Seniors are as follows: Keith Brown fnot a senior, but age limited competi- tionj Arlene Burk-All County, Jack Godfrey, Bob Heckaman, Dave Lashley-All County, Bob Lewis, Danny Ray-Honorable Mention, Doug Reed-All County, Phil Simmons- Honorable Mention, Bob Walker-Honorable Mention, Ron Wamer-Honorable Mention. Seniors of 56, when the club was a young team. Ken Bostedor-All County, Nelson Brown, Bob Leach, Fritz Smith, Dick Tallman-All County, Bob Wells. Among the 57 Seniors Ernie Adams received All County and Dick Dean-Honorable Mention. Anytime a squad earns half their games-Q4-3-lj for a third place finish, they've had a successful season: however, we've bccn accustomed, in the past, to winning more than that, and so it was rather hard to stornachour three losses, and that's as it should be. The desire to win is all important in football, just as the desire to succeed in life is all important. Potentially, I felt, we could have beaten all teams despite our lack of speed. Mistakes were commonplace, as we were a young ball club with six seniors out of sixty-six boys we finished the season with sixty of the sixty-six uniforms issued. Each and every boy I observed has his strengths and potentials in some or several de- partments. If each could have realized that potential, and I my voice, we 'd have been real tough. Concord, one of the co-titlists we licked, still maintains we were the hardest hitting club they faced all season, so you see considering our potential, our in- consistency hurt, as we looked good on one play and just the opposite on the next, gaining good yardage and then losing big yardage. WE DEFINITELY LACKED THE AGGRESSIVENESS AND DESIRE THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED OUR TEAMS OF THE PAST. However, we've just concluded our fifth consecutive winning season. Our sen- iors had the opportunity of playing on two all winning teams before graduating, the '54-55 clubs. As one boy put it, Most of the noise this year came from the bench, where in the past it came from the field. And as an official we have used since we started playing the game out here at Napoleon six years ago so appropriately expressed it, You used to HEAR these Napoleon boys blocks and tackles, now you have to LOOK for a good block or tackle. We lacked that necessary encouragement to each other and were definitely without a leader on the field as for those of us returning, we have the winter hibemation period to think over our football and when we come back next fall, we should be WISER, HEAVIER, and I hope, more SPIRITED and AGGRESSIVE! ! !! THIRD ROW: Fred Wendt, Carlton Warner, Walter Fox, Phil Marston, Leon Pittman, Eugene Gard- ner, Dick Kinder, Coach Jack Goodrich. The reserves, summarized by Coach J. L. Goodrich is small but scrappy, won all their games except two, the game with East Jackson and one withMan- chester. There were no exceptionally outstanding players but as all worked together as a unit the 1956 season was a very good one.
