LAST SEPTEMBER, THE NEW WAVE CHRISTIAN GROUP WAS INVITED TO HOLD MEETINGS HERE AT NDSS. SINCE SOME STUDENTS AND A SPONSOR BROUGHT THEM HERE, THERE IS AN OVERFLOW OF SINGING AND LAUGHTER IN ROOM 13H EVERY MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY AT LUNCH TIME. MIKE ZIMMER, A MEMBER OF THE GROUP, LIKES THE RELEASE THE MEETINGS PROVIDE. IF I AM HAVING A BAD DAY, I ENJOY GOING TO THE MEETING 8ECAUSE I CAN RELAX AND BE WITH MY FRIENDS AS WELL AS SING AND TALK ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS. THE NEW WAVE GROUP IS BY NO MEANS PASSIVE. IN THE PAST YEAR ITS MEMBERS HAVE PROTESTED ABORTION AND SEX BOUTIQUES, AS WELL AS PRAYING FOR CITY HALL AND THE LOCAL CONSTABULARY. CONSIDERING THE SUCCESS ENJOYED IN THE FIRST YEAR, WITH AN AVERAGE OF 20 PEOPLE ATTENDING EACH MEETING, THE GROUP FULLY EXPECTS TO CONTINUE MEETINGS AT NDSS WITH GUEST SPEAKERS, TESTEM0N1 ALS, S ING-A-LONGS, AND SHARING. c L U B The Debating Club, sponsored by Mr. Ian Smith and Mr. James Duthie, encourages students to research topics of contemporary concern and present effective arguments through rhetorical skills. As a club, debating has always done well when the members have had experience at junior high level first and have come to N.D.S.S. having mastered the basics. Such is the case at the moment. The N.D.S.S. Debating Team has had a very successful year both in terms of numbers of partici- pants and successes. We won the Ravenhurst Debate competition in November and were runners up in the Island championships last month. Five debaters: Eileen Stewart, Nancy Hepinstall, Jim Capstick, Jeremy Fraser and Rachel Dunstan have qualified for the Provincial Championships to be held in Squamish from 6th - 9th March. Other members of the club are Lisa Fratp ietro, Robert Cameron, Mike Laanela, Larry Conn, Sean Broderick, Dan Ferneyhough and Brenda Parhar. 139
