THE NAVY ON JULY I, I943, CREATED THE V-I2 PROGRAM FOR THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF GIVING PROSPECTIVE NAVAL OFFI- CERS THE BENEFITS OF A COLLEGE EDUCATION IN THOSE SPE- CIALIZED AREAS MOST NEEDED BY THE NAVY, THEREBY CREAT- ING A CONTINUOUS RESERVOIR OF POTENTIAL OFFICER MATE- RIAL TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE. THE V-I2 UNIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA IS MADE UP OF VARIOUS TYPES OF ENGINEERS, PRE-MEDICAL, PRE-DENTAL. DENTAL AND MEDICAL STUDENTS. TRAINEES IN ENGINEERING COMPLETING THE V-I2 PROGRAM ARE SENT TO A PRE-MIDSHIPMEN'S SCHOOL FOR INDOCTRINA- TION AND FROM THERE TO A MIDSHIPMEN'S SCHOOL FOR FINAL TRAINING, WHICH, SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED, LEADS TO A COMMISSION IN THE U. S. NAVAL RESERVE. PRE-MEDICAL AND PRE-DENTAL STUDENTS, UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR PRE- MEDICAL OR PRE-DENTAL REOUIREMENTS, ARE SENT TO A NAVY-SPONSORED MEDICAL OR DENTAL SCHOOL FOR THE REMAINDER OF THEIR TRAINING.
