Many blisters, gallons of sweat, a few burned up typewriters, a broken camera, and a few casualties went into this vast project. If the workers were paid their true value, you could not afford this book. I give to you the year book class of 1978. Rick doing his usual, in yearbook, acting busy. HUNDREDS OF CA TS The Teachers are Ready This year we registered in the fall on the first day of school. After the Seniors registered, the teachers leaned back . . . This isn't so bad . The Juniors came and all went well except health and P. E. but the faculty weathered the storm except for Gibons and Johnson who were spent. After the Sophomores tangled with Comp 1 and most of them were registered, the storm broke! One Hundred and Thirty Freshmen fighting for classes, of which there were none. Freshmen were still registering for classes a week later and the faculty hasn't recovered yet. The Students are Ready Gosh! 1 hope I get in 13 Charles Tubb signing up ALL THE QUEENS HORSES AND Twins, teddies, sportsters and monsters. Spirit week was a huge success. Although our football team hadn't won a game the students were excited enough that it didn't matter. On the last day of spirit week the teachers and students competed elbow to elbow in exciting and playful races. The games were held in the rodeo arena of the fair grounds. Of course the seniors won when the games were over. Another added attraction this year was a Powder Puff football game. Frosh and Srs. v.s. Jrs. and Soph. The game was a tie. ALL THE KINGS MEN Leslie Potts loves her BABY”, Greg Roush. Girls after the Powder Puff game. Mr. Dyal sure is mad about something. Marilyn the fireman, firewomen, fireperson! Cheryl makes some kind of teddy bear! Right: Bobcat snowbunny Robin Elbek. The three stooges!? BACK ROW: Ted Fischer, Brad Carter, Paul Haley, Ken Kramer, Ed McGarity, Rob Irwin, Chuck Myers, Glen Lilly, Rich Capanna, Ron Wood, Duane Deitz, Larry Adams, Trennon Hamilton, John Shorb, Ray Ing, Jerry Evernden, Mike Capanna, Arron Shermerhorn, Tod VanLeuven, Terry Bush. The football team had a winning and a losing year. The winning aspect was the enthusiasm and spirit of the team and the student body. The losing was on the scoreboard, only. Many players were inexperienced, but they never gave up the fight. The bobcat fighting spirit showed, even when it seemed hopeless. Our players played as hard in the last game as in the first. Mr. DiFede was the head coach, and his assistant coaches were Mr. Mauze and Blackman. These coaches worked very hard with and for the players. It will be our great disadvantage not to have coach DiFede next year. This really was a good year: Even if the scoreboard didn't show it. WERE OUT TO GET UM! 19 Mozie and Blackman hope it's not another Italian joke. Our beloved mascot Pam. Rob tried and died. Look out Arment those guys look mean. 20 Defide tells Shorb, don't be afraid John. We've got spirit. The Capanna brothers what a team. Rich Capanna, Streaks for another score. Kent Gardner, HELP!” Who says we're yellow bellies!” 21 Coaches Thomas and Farnsworth coached the J.V. this year. The team was young and inexperienced, but played well. The coaches are looking forward to next year, when they will be bigger and more experienced. 22 23 THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE WENT OUT FOR CROSS COUNTR Y AND THE BOBCAT BEAT THEM BOTH. Coach Towne (Smiley) The young M.P. boys cross-country team placed third in the dis'trict meet at Bandon and first in the sub-district meet at Coquille. The number one runner was senior foreign exchange student Juha-Matti Lampola. The next five runners were sophomores led by Brent Glover and Mark Duncan. The boys' league dual meet record was 4 wins and 2 losses including a 29-28 loss to Bandon. The JV team placed second in the district meet. Myrtle Point started a girls cross-country team this year but finished with only four girls, five are needed to make a team. Rosie McGarity was number one, followed by Donna Davenport, Tina Works, and Mary Ann Stewart. Both teams had an enjoyable season with weekend picnic runs at Loon Lake and at the beach being the most enjoyable workouts. Left to Right: Top row. Girls Volleyball completed the season with 5 wins and 9 losses. Most versatile player on the team was Theresa Miller. Her fast serve and agility on her feet left her high scorer of the season with 97 points. Most improved setter was Billie Bohlman who scored a total of 56 points in the season. Kit Thurman and Cindy Bohlman came to J.V. from Varsity at midseason and their experience helped the team win some of its final games. Cindy finished the season with 47 points while Kit had 19. The season began with well over 15 girls, which was the number of uniforms available. Due to the fact that some of the girls had to share uniforms, not everyone got to suit up for every game. By the end of the season we had only 15 players and the team, as a whole, showed a great deal of improvement in their ballhandling abilities. The team was coached by Pat Railey. Sophomores decorated their hall accordingly, they used the theme of Santa's workshop. Fred Flintstone visited the Juniors. The Juniors did a very good job on their hall, they also ran the Seniors stiff competition for first place. BOBCATS TOUGH! This season was a growing and improving season. There was much accomplished through the individual efforts of every member of the team. There were no members that half heartedly wrestled but all had goals set and were achieving these goals. Some special accomplishments were: David Cagley being high point wrestler and placing 3rd in state, Bob DeSoto and Shawn Potts for placing 2nd in district and going to state, Roy Spangler for placing 4th in district and being the most improved wrestler sharing that honor with John Knight, Rick Zick for placing 6th in state and being a co-captain along with Larry Adams and Tom Thurman, Larry also placed 1st in district, while Tom had the fastest pin of the year and also placed 1st in district, and Marshall Lewis who was this year's most inspirational wrestler. Coach Dyal looks unhappy. 97 WRESTLING 98 99 ASSEMBLIES AND ENTERTAINMENT Assemblies this year were few and far between. This year two members get to go to Kansas City Missouri for the national FFA convention. They meet once a month with their advisor Mr. Herman. They are also trained in shop skills like welding, sharpening drills, etc. These students will be our Future Farmers of America. The Athletic club is a new club made up this year. Club members consist of any lettermen. This includes our girl athletes. With the help of Mr. DeFedi, they were able to have money raising projects such as a jog-a-thon, Donkey basketball game and a number of car washes and baked food sales. Some of the money they made will be used for buying new sweat suits for the track team. CLUBS CLUBS National Honor Society is based on four principles: Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, and character. Students have been chosen by privilege. Membership usually numbers around 20 to 25 with average G.P.A. of 3.6. Members thus recognized at graduation for their high academic achievement. Plans are to perhaps begin a National Junior Honor Society at the middle school level. 116 CLUBS CLUBS The science club was organized in February as a forum for students whose common interest centers around some field of science. At present the members are all either freshmen, sophomores or juniors. Regular club meetings are scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month. To this point our meetings have involved discussions of our spring field trip to OMSI and the Portland Zoo, a suitable club conservation project and a taxidermy demonstration which was presented in April by the club vice president, David Cagley. Future plans include an annual field trip, programs of scientific interest at the monthly meetings and a club sponsored community conservation project. PRESENTING THE CLASS OF 1978 My Tribute to the Class of 1978 by Betsy Leep. Seniors of 1978 it seems only yesterday we had just begun our new life in high school. The closeness of each fellow classmate started to bind together and as the years grew, the lock was formed into a close class. Now it is time to take that golden key and unlock our lives and go our separate ways to rebuild that lock we call life. I have laughed and cried with these seniors and I would never trade it for another class. You have shown me what real friendship and what being needed not only as a person but as a friend meant. Seniors, the scholastic, creative, and exciting ability you have shown me and other watchers makes me proud to be a 1978 senior and others envious of such a fine class. I wish each and every senior the best of luck in their future and I hope all the goals that have been set are fulfilled to make you happy for the rest of your lives. Betsy A. The graduating Class of 1978 lived through a war, government upheaval and an energy crisis. Through all of this we have survived and thrived. This was the first class to have different colored gowns. The girls wore white and the boys were in blue. The girls carried white carnations, tinted blue. Spring pastel colors were used in decorating. The back drop was a field of white with a rainbow running across it and a pot of gold at the end. Unlike last year the sun was out. The white gowns showed up beautifully. The graduating class of 1978 gives thanks to all the people of the school and community who helped in making us the masters of our destiny . The seniors they let in to this school! Greg Roush and Curt Noben are wrestling? Joy and Irean are studying so hard. THROUGH ROUGH CLASSES MMM| SENIORS !UJ-SS Kavur . . hn J ««rMiMK Havm, N.
