Miller The class of 77 , like all seniors, graudate with anticipation, fear, regret, yet we kept a unity other senior classes often lose. Our class had great times, super spirit and understanding friends to help each other through rough spots. Reflecting back on our high school days, many activities remain unforgettable memories to us. For example, in our junior year when we had to raise money for prom decorations and then construct an atmosphere of Midnight Blues at the Myrtle Crest gym. The class creatively not only produced a prom, but in our senior year we cleverly constructed Christmas hall decorations to win the contest. Another unforgettable memory was the salute to the senior varsity football players in the 1976 season, when half the team marched out on the football field as retiring high school football players. Whatever the event, the class of 1977 highlighted activities for four great years. But now our high school days have ceased and each senior has begun a new life in what used to be a far away future. What used to be dreams and illusions of the unknown years after graduation are now evident and real and as the future becomes the present, I hope life continually meets all expectations. To each senior, I wish much happiness and luck in life and as we strive for ambitions and goals, let us keep the serenity of life in mind; the effort of goodwill at work; and the treasure of friendship at heart. Vicki S. Miller (Student Body President) 19 20 21 CVJ Csl Karin Vercmnen, is a Senior. Laura Ramirez, is a Sophomore. During the year of 1976, 1977 we have had three foreign exchange students; Karin Vercamnen from Belgium, has stayed with Tanya Anderson. Haruko Fusano is from Japan, she has stayed with Liz Swarts. Laura Ramirez has stayed with Susan Frazier, and is from Costa Rica. We had six exchange students come from other schools to visit Myrtle Point High school, and five students that went to Lake Oswego. Karin comments about the food. [tltD 35 Coach Don Fisher, one of Oregon's winningest football coaches, has decided to take a leave from his football coaching responsibilities at Myrtle Point High School. He will continue teaching physical education and health in the district, and he has high hopes of expanding his varsity baseball program. New dugouts, backstops, and field repair is taking place now to give the Bobcats a new look this spring. Don's 1976 team ended the season with an outstanding 7-2 record in a conference that was second to none in Oregon's football circles. Gold Beach tied for the state AA championship and Coquille was ranked 1-2 all season. His 1975 Bobcats had a similar finish. In departing, Coach Fisher had this to say, I have several educational interests I want to pursue in the near future, but the many experiences I have had working with our young students and players at Myrtle Point over the last eight years are invaluable to me as a person, teacher and coach. I hope these students and players have experienced success, learned cooperation, self confidence, and most of all sportsmanship. His overall varsity record of 50-21-1 is respected throughout the state, and there will undoubtedly be considerable pressure placed on him to come out of his retirement role in the future. Mr. Fisher is also the district's P.E. and health coordinator, and Myrtle Point High School's activity director. Good job, Don, it's been a pleasure working with you, and on behalf of District No. 41 and all of its support systems, we wish you the best of luck in all of your future involvements. Let me have it Aaron. This year the Bobcats were led by a newcomer, coach Fred Blackman. The outstanding scorer was Aaron Schermerhorn. The season ended with an 8-14 record. The two outstanding games were with Brookings and Bandon. The Brookings' game was lost in overtime, and the Bandon game was won after a hard fought battle. All in all the team had a pretty terrible year. Next year they are going to be tough. Scott Johnson shoots. McCall goes up for the shot but missed. Ten different players had starting roles at one time or another with no one averaging over 12 points per game. The team's defense showed great improvement during the year with Kevin Arment, Kent Gardner, and Jerry Evernden being the best defensive players. Glenn Lillie and Jerry Evernden were the top rebounders and Mark Dietz led the team in blocked shots. Hal Kissel and Ted Fischer were the leading scorers, Inconsistent offense and poor free throw shooting were key factors in the seven losses with at least four games being lost at the free-throw line. He had a career total of 73 WINS, and 29 LOSSES, plus 3 DRAWS during his four years on the Varsity Team. The Co-Captains were Matt Schneider, Leon Rayevich and Darrell Pattee. The most outstanding wrestler of the year was Tom Thurman with 85 points. The most improved wrestler was Mike Winningham, with most inspirational being Larry Adams. Freshman David Cagely had the fastest pin during the season of 12 seconds. The Team sent four guys to the State Tournament, included were: Matt Schneider, Leon Rayevich, Dan Gibbs, and Tom Thurman. Matt placed third in the 178 weight class with Leon placing fifth in the 141 weight class. The four boys as a team placed 19th, which was second best out of our district at the State Tournament. On off-season events Tom Thurman took State Champion at the Greco-Roman Tournament while David Cagely took 4th place at the State Junior Development. Wednesday was HAT, BUTTON, AND TIE day. Friday was STUFFED ANIMAL day. All through the week Dan Laboto went around and found people who weren't following school rules. At the assembly Friday all the people found being naughty had to sit in front of the audience with signs saying what they did. 65 N -V- IFACPHW This year senior-faculty basketball game was once again a huge success; for the teachers, that is. Actually the only reason the seniors lost was that the game was on a Monday . The players just couldn't adjust to the new week after a big weekend. Not that the teachers don't have just as big weekends. But they know how to handle it better! The suspense grew as the seniors really gave their all for the team even though the team was made of only boys. They still fought hard. All in all it was a well fought battle. The seniors hold no grudge against the teachers for beating them by such a wide margin. Mr. Hermann can't believe it as Steve pulls a rip city on him. He didn't make this one either. Don't worry, he didn't make it. Seniors fly high. Groovies great jump shot. 66 Rah Rah Rah! I can't believe we're ahead. 67 iLEJLUL The girls' track team had a good showing this year finishing 2nd in the league. The girls only lost to Brookings. The team was much stronger in all events. The depth displayed helped to attain our 2nd place standing. Each girl worked hard. There was a lot of dedication displayed. Each girl improved her own personal performance, which also attributed to the team's success. It was a good year. The team will be sorry to lose its outstanding seniors, Bever Bowen, Virginia Evans, Debbie Roe, and Karin Vercammen. The girls that went to state were, Cheri Roe in the high jump, Carmen Myers in the high jump, and Rosie McGarity in the Mile. Rosie placed 11 in state while Carmen and Cheri just cleared the opening height of 5 feet even. Mo l?o 69 Back Row Josie Knight, Karin Vercammen, Bebbie Roe, Sever Bowen. Stan Stewart was the outstanding performer. He set new school records in the 880, mile and 2 mile. He placed 3rd at the state meet. Leading scorers were Stan Stewart, Leon Rayevich, and Darrell Patee. Outstanding Freshmen were, Darren Boone, as he placed third in the district high jump and sixth in the 440. There were a number of good athletes from the sophomore class. They should make M.P. a strong team next year. This was the first year on the new all weather track. The Varsity Ball Club made a good account of themselves in the games they played. Many of the games towards the end of the season were rained out. This Club was mostly Seniors but there were a few Sophomores that showed up the Juniors and the Seniors. Coach Fisher has coached all of the Senior ball players since they started high school and the guys make a fine team. 74 The team consisted of: Randy Bryant, Bob Desoto, Ron Proffitt, Gary Heien Ron Woods, Roger Clarno, Danny Herman, Kathy Walter, Sue Frazier, Sandy Fischer, Pam Martin, Ken Stinnett, Rod Davis The J.V. Baseball Club has a record of 2-3 for the season. Very good considering their best pitchers, Hal Kissel and Mike Capana were playing Varsity ball. The team was very strong in offense, defense and basic baseball skills but not having their pitchers knocked them down. For the first time ever there were four girls on the team. Their leading hitter was Randy Bryant with an average of .300. The leading defensive player was Joe Johnson. All in all Coach Gibbons was very proud of this team. 75 What a hit. Do it in the dirt!
