PAULA COOK Clerk Myrtle Point Union High School is indeed fortunate in having a school board which demonstrates its great interest in student and community affairs. They make every effort to see that the best possible physical plant and equipment are provided with the funds available. 5 PRESIDENT studeni i:iiiini:ii The Student Council began this year by proposing several amendments to the school constitution. The members of the Student Council attended the Student Council Convention at Grants Pass and came back with many good ideas for improving our school. Nancy has also been active in FHA and has been an honor student during her four years in high school. Nancy's sister Betty was Myrtle Point High's DAR Candidate two years ago. In addition to a full schedule of pep assemblies and sports events, a number of concerts were given. In November a concert was given for parents during National Education Week. A fall concert was given at the High School on December 15, several concerts were given for the local grade schools during the year, and a winter concert was also given. The band participated in the annual Music Festival at Coos Bay at which each band performs individually. A spring concert was given. Ilene Thompson Student Director. 2), ance Marching Band Football Season the fans saw the marching band perform during the half and pre-game activities, which was one of the highlights of this year's season. The band under the direction of Mr. Simons and Ervin Royer, drum major, journeyed to Myrtle Creek and with them put on a thrilling half-time show. The band did a marvelous job and are to be commended as this is the first marching band we have had. They have bigger and better plans for the coming year, which will put them nver the top. Dance Band The High School Dance Band, Bobette Serenaders, was organized this year. The members include: Elma Jean Magill, Ilene Thompson, Bruce Whitaker, Bill Long, Syd Amaud, Terry Sell, Richard Howe, Janet Williams, Shirley VanFossen, Richard Baker, Alice Miller, and Tucker Brierly. direct° ’ haS ting cHo-;roud dirCCTran eU bC T their SCh0°theY ve that th Y a{{ teaching CHORUS The chorus has been very active this year with an operetta, a Fall Concert, concert at the National Education Week Program, Spring Concert, Music Festival, and several concerts in the by grade schools. 46 near- PEPSTffiS The pepsters this year were Audrey Russell, Iris Brower, Elma Jean Magill, Peggy Dayton, Nancy Meyer, Gloria Brower, and Ginger Schmidt. Uniforms for football (shown above) were red culottes, red sweaters, and white dickies. For basketball the girls changed to red dickies, white sweaters, and red culottes. 47 The duties of the Pep Club are to plan all pep rallies, perform in assemblies, and make arrangements for the annual Homecoming celebrations. Members must attend all games and promote sportsmanlike conduct and give support to the team at all sports events where good school spirit must be exhibited. A Girl of the Month was selected and honored by Girls League each month, this selection being based on her contribution to the school by service, inspiration, sportsmanship, leadership, and example. PURPOSES: We work together for better and happier home life for everyone. We think that helping to make happy homes, now and in the future, is the most important thing that youth can do for democracy. Mrs. Shiell The Girl’s Athletic Association has been very active under the superb leadership of Mrs. Betty Shiell, our physical education instructor. The G. A. A. has now the largest turnout in a long time. It has approximately fifty girls interested in both indoor and outdoor sports. The G. A. A. has been very active this year. They played such games as football, basketball, baseball, and an assortment of other games. This year the Junior Varsity had a turnout of 23 boys interested in football. The largest percentage of them were freshmen. Much of their training has been received from their coach, Mr. Hoefs. Although Coach Hoef's Varsity Basketball Team did not have an outstanding season, they were barely nosed out by Bandon from a berth in the District Playoffs. This year's games were characterized by many last minute scoring plays and spectacular finishes.
