Baseball LEAGUE C0 CHAMPIONS DISTRICT CHAMPIONS' Co-champions of the Umpqua Valley League, district champions, and winner in the state semi-finals playoff, the Viking baseball team advanced farther toward the state championship than at any other time in the school's A-2 history. Opening the season late in March, the Viks played a total of 15 regular season games, earning an impressive 9 win 6 loss record. The only team able to defeat Myrtle Creek twice was Glide, UVL co-champion..In the sub-district playoff at Myrtle Creek, the Viks topped Glide by a 6-5 score in an extra-inning game. District championship honors were earned by the Viks when they met the Glendale Pirates on their field at night. Timely hitting and excellent relief pitching by Jim Murray gave M.C. a 5-4 triumph and sent our boys into the quarter-finals against the Junction City Tigers. It was on May 27th that Wes Davidson pitched a five-hitter against the Tigers on their field at Junction City. A big second inning for the Viks saw four runs scored, contributing to the victorious 5-1 tally at the end of the game, and putting the Myrtle Creek squad into the semi-finals for the state championship. Rain and mud were the only discordant features of the state semi-final championship game at Myrtle Creek on May 26, when the Vikings defeated Stayton 5-2. This win placed Myrtle Creek as at least the second best in the A-2 classification in the State of Oregon. Meeting the team of Central High School, Monmouth-Independence, at Multnomah Stadium in Portland on June 7, the Viks failed in their bid for state championship honors, when they did not crack the tight and flawless performance of their opponents. The nearly 200 specta- tors from Myrtle Creek rose in loud acclaim as the state officials presented individual awards and the second-place trophy to the squad and Coach Loghry. Speed was the keynote of success during the entire seasonj Coach Loghry and Assistant Coach Olson stressed the squeeze play to score a number of runs. Heads-up baseball was dis- played in the stealing of bases or taking an extra base on a hit at the least weakening of the opposition's defense. Teamwork was an important factor in developing a winning combination. The infield, composed of Fred Earwood, Bob Cavaner, Rod Trask, and Gregg Lindquist, improved with each game. This defense proved itself in the Junction City and semi-final games, when the com- bination made two double plays. The outfield had Jim Murray, Don Bishop, and Bob Paine, the latter alternating in right field with Rick Cearley. Ed Cearley did most of the receiving. Al- though this was his first year behind the plate, he performed as a veteran. The mound staff was strong with three outstanding hurlers. Wes Davidson, a junior, started most of the important games. He went the distance against Junction City and Stayton. Jim Murray was Coach Loghry's stopper, while Fred Earwood displayed fine qualities on the mound during his brief appearances. Fred held the heavy-hitting UVL Allstars to 3 runs in a seven- inning sunt. The success of this year's team could be repeated in 1959, since only three men were lost by graduation. They were Don Bishop, Ed Cearley, and Jim Murray.
