Trask, G. Lindquist, F. Shirtcliff, Coach Abrahamson. Stat. P. Kelsey, B. James Manager, E. Lindquist. The Myrtle Creek Vikings for the second consecutive year in a row placed second in the Umpqua Valley League. 'Coach Bob Abrahalnson opened the season with only one veteran left from last year's starting lineup, Jim Murray. The remainder of the squad was composed of: Seniors: Dick Naas and Keith Ogborn, Juniors: Dudley Klimback, Gregg Lindquist, Wes Davidson, Glen Bell, a.nd Don Lochman, Sophomores: Rod Trask, Fred Earwood, Bob Cavaner, and Frank Shirtcliff. The Vikings opened their season with a victory over Illinois Valley and in early season games they totaled a 4 win-2 loss record, losing twice to Myrtle Point. Entering a pre- Christmas tournament at Roseburg, the Viks finished fourth behind Roseburg, Albany, and Douglas. When league games began in January, Myrtle Creek lost their opening contest to Douglas, but won the next four games to end the first half of play tied with Douglas and Riddle for the league crown. The crucial game was with Riddle, but the Vikings easily defeated the Irish to hand them their only league defeat in the first series of play. The opening game of the second round with Douglas proved the deciding one to deter- mine the league champions. It was a close contest throughout with first M.C. holding a slight edge and then Douglas forging ahead. The Trojans stalled the last three minutes of play and although the Vikings crept to within two points, they could not quite overcome their opponent's lead. It was a heartbreaker for team and fans alike to lose but the Viks did their best and fought down to the final buzzer in hope of a team triumph. Jim Murray, Keith Ogborn, and Dick Naas will be lost by graduation. These three were vital assets to the team and will be missed next season, but Coach Abrahamson has four of his starting five returning as the nucleus for a fine team during the 1958-1959 season. 63
