Ronny McGillis was football manager this year. The Vikings, under the coaching of Jack Kieling and Corky Van Loo, hit the gridiron with strong hopes of a winning season. The Myrtle Creek Varsity had IH returning lettermen and some husky t1'ansfe1's. Among the transfers was a freckled face, red head youth called Pinky Andrews. lle was said to be one of the best defensive players Myrtle Creek has had for a long time, and a very good offensive player. Returning lettermen were Seniors: Bob Wilder, Neil Tester, lien Bond, Don Gillespie, Jim llfce, and Don Pittsg Juniors: Dick Dryant, Ilalph llutter, Dick liomp, and Peter Patt. Transfers were Delmar Andrews, Darrell Smith, llay and llalph Adsit, Jim Lowe, and Darrell Bangs. Winning two out of th1'ee starts, the Vikings became injury hampe1'ed. In the second game with Coquille. left guard llalph llutter received a split lip from a misplaced Coquille fist. The injury required several stitches. Left tackle Dick liryant also received a back inju1'y in this game. The hardest blow of the season came in the two following games, in which three of our backfield men were put out of the game for the season. ln the illinois Valley game left halfback Bob Wilder received a broken hand and in the Phoenix game quarterback Dick Komp went into a tailspin and broke his arm. Right halfback Neil Tester rebroke his wrist in this game also. If this had been all the injuries we would have thought we had had bad luck, but this wasn't all. Others consisted of fractured nose, Jim Dellerg slight head concussion, Jim lliceg broken nose, Derald Pattg ILO. and slight head concussion, Ken Bondg bruised kidney, Cal Chaneyg water on the knee, Wilson Darnesg hand injuries which received stitches, Andrews and Bryant. In addition to these injuries, there were a few minor injuries. Despite our losses we ended the season in a three-way Coach .ack Kielwa tie for second place in the J.D.J. League. Special tribute should be paid this year to the reserves that warmed the bench in the early part of the season, but with the aid of a few veterans trounced Sutherlin 28 to ll at the last of the season. Team spirit was low because of accidents and loss of players, but fair and clean playing was a trait of the Vikings the whole season.
