It is the sincere hope of the editors and staff that this book will be remembered as more than just a collection of candid photos and trite cliches. Our aim has been to provide a lasting memorial of your high school years that will evoke many emotions with each successive reading. Your memories of high school years will undoubtedly range from those of tears and sorrow to smiles and laughter. We hope to have captured them all: the excitement and high emotion of pep rallies and bonfires, the quiet sharing of thoughts and ideas, the noise and activity of the lunch room, the satisfaction of successful musical productions, the hard work that paid off academically, the thrills of victory and the agonies of defeat, the sadness of facing graduation, and the hope of new horizons to be challenged. This is not the end of your life, but it is a brand new beginning. We do not mean to be trite but wish all of you the very best of luck and success in your future endeavors. In closing, we would like to leave you with the following statement: This above all: to thine own self be true. Diana Foster 4 Superintendent and Board of Education When you consider your thirteen years of school life thus far, it is surprising to realize that only twenty percent of that time actually has been spent in school. Your out-of-school involvements with peers, parents, and community have occupied the remainder of that time. Regardless, the influence of school upon your life has been considerable. Your education served to form you into tomorrow's citizens. Hopefully, it has instilled in you a meaningful degree of competitiveness, that vehicle necessary for a successful life. The challenge you now face is to draw upon those thirteen years of formation, to take stock of your gifts and strength, and to step forth and apply them toward a better life for you, your family, and the world. The diploma you have just earned is your passport into that world of tomorrow. M. Douglas Zoller Superintendent of Schools 5 Row 1 — R. Kuempel, S. Willower, K. Irland; Row 2 — P. Rosenkrans. P. Same, S. Beals. J. Pannucci; Missing— M. Midey, W. Parker, M. Pignone Messages From Our Devoted To The Class of 1987 The headlines of today show national budget problems, star wars defense questions, and ecological changes • all of the modern-day world you are about to enter. Some of you will have more education in your future while others will soon take your place in the nation’s work force. Mynderse Academy has tried to prepare you for your entrance into this adult world, but your education will continue each day with living experiences. Continue to strive for your personal best, contributing as much as you are able. Tomorrow's headlines will be changed by the action of your generation. You graduate with my personal best wishes for a happy productive future. Good luck. Vincent Caraccilo Assistant Principal To The Class Of 1987 Unfortunately, you are graduating into a world so full of life-threatening evils that your future is threatened to the utmost. Daily, you are bombarded by the media bringing to your attention the never-ending acts of terrorism, increased usage of illegal drugs which often leads to death for the user, and last, but not least, the super powers’ arms race featuring atomic weaponry. However, your future will be in your hands. You must go forward, from the day you graduate from Mynderse Academy, to become all that you are capable of becoming. Then, and only then, will you be able to assume a leadership role in helping to bring about peaceful and everlasting solutions to the dangers that threaten your very existence. You. the Class of ’87. are the hope of the future. Accept your challenge to go forth as leaders. Best wishes and good luck to each of you. Domemck Paradise Vice Principal 6 Jr. and Sr. High Principals : In June, 1987, selected members of the Class of 1987 will receive a program entitled ‘‘Commencement Exercises. The word, ‘‘commencement,” often causes some confusion, and perhaps it is right and proper to clear up that confusion. We know that the root of that word is commence,” which means to start or to begin. The definition is very appropriate to the exercises as well as to your Senior year. You have not completed your education, but in fact, have just started it. Your formal education, for the past thirteen years, was not designed to prepare you to end or conclude a portion of your life, but it was to prepare you to begin a new life. As a consequence. you have assumed many rights and privileges, but with graduation, you have also assumed many awesome responsibilities. Among these responsibilities is to use your education to assist in the resolution of the inequalities among mankind. For without the aforementioned, all material gams and job-related successes are nothing. After graduation I will greet you not as a student in our school, but as a citizen of the world. It is my hope and prayer for everyone in the Class of 1987 that your pathway may be straight and true and that your destination may be golden with happiness and alive with vibrant promise. Gerald Macaluso Principal Throughout your school years you have examined the past, pondered the future, and most importantly, experienced the present. These experiences, whether joyful or tragic, have become a significant part of your lives. You may learn from history, or imagine new possibilities, but you must exist within the events of today. As you begin the next phase of your lives, remember that although circumstances may become complex, you have the knowledge, understanding, and self-discipline to face new challenges. And, in confronting these challenges-be they mental or physical, professional or emotional-remember to trust your own abilities. You all have the skills and natural talent to help you succeed. In closing, I wish to commend you for your efforts and your success. I wish you the best of luck in whatever field of endeavor you may select. Anthony J. Ferrara Assistant Principal 7 8 Class Of 1987 Dedicates 10 Yearbook To Mrs. Becht In our four years at Mynderse, one person has been outstanding in her support of the Class of ’87. Mrs. Elizabeth Becht has been a varsity track coach,a J.V.soccer coach, a gym teacher, and our Senior Class advisor. She has enthusiastically helped our class through a time of crucial decisions, and her smile has brightened many a rough day. Bye Grandma, We’ll Miss You The Class of 1987 is proud to honor Mrs. Anna Belle Tyler, better known as “Grandma. She has been our friend and advisor during our high school years. Mrs. Tyler has glorified the position of teacher’s aide with her gentle authority and close relationship with all of the students whose respect she has gained. Her warmth, guidance, and encouragement have touched each of us in a very special way. In this, we leave enriched. 12 As one life ends, Another begins. But so much Cannot be expressed Through pictures and captions. Valued friendships Are preserved in our hearts. After awhile Our letters will grow shorter, And they will be fewer. Andreas All the high school classes are very important in preparing students for their future, but the Junior year seems to be the key year. It is at this time that we must choose the path that is best suited to prepare ourselves for our future. The Junior year is also important in learning that most accomplishments are a result of hard work and cooperation. The students of the Class of 1988 may still not be sure of their future directions but have learned that any project can be accomplished by working to the best of their abilities. As we face our Senior year and the great deci sions of the future, the experiences and successes of our Junior year will remind us of our potential. Spring began with a burst of music. Mynderse brought another musical production to its stage, and the audience was captivated by the sounds of “My Fair Lady,” The superb talent of Kathy Bleiler and John Manzari brought the show to life. Music was further enhanced in Seneca Falls with the Mynderse-hosted Seneca Falls Pagent of Bands. Mynderse Academy displayed its atheletic superiority in Spring sports. The Golf team nearly captured its third consecutive league championship. Meanwhile, the Girls’ Varsity Softball team captured the Section V. Class B title by defeating LeRoy 5-2 in the final game of the tournament. The Boys' Baseball team made the voyage to the semi-finals of the Section V tournament before being defeated. The JV Lacrosse team had an outstanding season achieving a 13-6-1 record, while Girls’ Track topped its division. Students of the Model U N. club, under the leadership of Mr Walter Gable, journeyed to Washington D.C. to represent Mynderse Academy last spring. They participated in the NAIMUN(North American International Model United Nations), conference at Georgetown University, skillfully representing the nation of the Congo. Spring quickly ended with the Senior Ball causing students to realize that another school year had already flown by. 95 96 Seniors Followed Yellow Brick Road to the Ball As Spring temperatures rose, so did the intensity of preparations for the 1986 Senior Ball. With reservations made and orders filled, all seemed set for a perfect night. Thanks to the music of the Blue Lights, the dance went on to be a wonderful success as everyone participated in the celebration of the new royal court. After the dance, many people went to the Moose Lodge for the Afterglow where one could wind down and enjoy the rest of the night. Finally, as things came to a close, it was indeed time to say, Goodbye Yellow brick Road. — Mike Covell 97 Across 1. ATTIRE FOR GRADUATION 5. A MERRY HOLIDAY 7. MYNDERSE MUSICAL 1986 10. With only two returning starters the team was inexperienced but enthusiastic. Senior Captains Matt Sipos and Bryan Cayward guided the young team to a 2-6 record. The running game was led by junior running back Ed Caraccilo with linemen Scott Swenson, Matt Sipos, and Darryl Praul making the blocks. Seniors Todd Mumford and Dave Helpard led the receivers. The high point of the season was the 12-6 victory over Geneva. Sophomore Brendan Scanlon led the offense with 80 yards rushing. Senior Ron Stuck had a 72 yard run, setting up the winning score. Junior Jason Piscitelli also contributed with 46 yards rushing. Outstanding players selected for allleague honors were Matt Sipos and Scott Swenson for the first team, and Bryan Cayward, Jason Verkey, and Ed Caraccilo for the second team. Todd Mumford and Jeff Rook received honorable mention. Since many underclassmen, including junior quarterback Jason Verkey, gained valuable experience, the outlook for the '87 season is optimistic. 119 Row 1: B Majors, R. Stuck, S. Branning, S. The representatives get a chance to meet and work together in various debates, caucuses and lectures. Girls’ State is both educational and enjoyable. Boys’ State is a seminar sponsored and run by the American Legion. Selected students journey to Syracuse where they learn about our state government and how it works. The boys par- ticipate in mock assembly meetings and run for state and local offices in a government which they themselves set up. Out of the 1500 boys who participate, 2 members are selected to represent our state in Boys' Nation. 148 Jr. Rotarians and Jr. Kiwanians Four students. Bill Larrabee, Wilbur Holden. Darryl Praul, and Joe Shaw, excelling in academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities, were selected as Jr. Rotarians. They were placed into a role in the organization which was one more of observation than participation. By observing Rotarians, the Jr. members see that the fraternal organization provides much assistance to the community. The Kiwanians are devoted to advancing social, business, and professional standards. Through the Jr. Kiwanian program the privileged Jr. members, Jim DiCesare and Dave Rutz, learn how the Kiwanians operates in the community, county, state, and world. 149 Block “M” Block M is the club for male varsity athletes who are in at least two Mynderse sports. In January club members portrayed South Africa and Vietnam at a conference at Syracuse University. In April some members represented Luxembourg at a conference in New York City. In May the club hosted a one day conference for area schools. In this picture you will see students who, if they are typical of club members previous years, will go on to major in international relations and the social sciences in college and then undertake major government jobs in these fields. 152 Ski Club For its third winter in a row, the Ski Club traveled to Bristol Mt. near Canandaigua for six trips of skiing. The club, as always, encouraged students who were not members to come along once or twice during the season and take advantage of the group rates. Through practice, lessons, and the challenge of the slopes we all improved our style and had a great time as well! 153 Row 1: D. DeLelys, M. Frank, J. McMahon, D. Lay; Row 2: M. Stefanoni, M. On March 30TH, the Varsity Chorus will travel on chartered buses to Albany to perform on the concourse, followed by dinner and some sight-seeing. Varsity Chorus is Mynderse Academy’s premier vocal ensemble. Fifty-eight members strong, the group has the heaviest performance schedule, performing in the school and in the community as many as ten times during the course of one year. For the first time in the last ten years, the Var- sity Chorus performed at St. Patrick's School at Christmas time. Also for the first time, the chorus will compete on the Grade V level at the annual state adjudication festival. Troy Corsner, Mary Rose D’Eredita, Kathleen Kuney, and Dennis Miller were selected to perform at the Area All-State Festival in Trumansburg. These same four, joined by Betsy Becker, Amy Brink, Anna Donofrio, Barb Grant and Jessica Webster, were chosen to take part in the All-County Music Festival at Penn Yan Academy. 154 Winter Color Gaurd 1987 was certainly a fine year for the Winter Color Gaurd. Competing in shows at Whitman. Trumansburg. Ithaca. Auburn, Groton, and Cortland. the guard has established itself as one of the state’s finest Class A color guards. The show pitted John Manzari as the overbearing speech expert, Henry Higgins, against Kathy Bleiler as the strong-willed flower girl-turned-lady , Eliza Doolittle. Mike Harrnacker played Higgins' trusted friend Colonel Pickering. Marty Burgie assumed the role of Alfred E. Doolittle, Eliza’s scheming father. Rounding out the cast were Dianna Russell as Mrs. Pearce, Higgins’ maid, Missy Haas as Higgins’ mother, Troy Corsner as Freddy. Kathleen Kuney as Mrs. Eynsford-Hill, and a chorus of twenty-five. The annual musical, now in its fifteenth year, has come to be amuch-anticipated event in the school and the community. A Thurber Carnival” is the first fall play to be produced on the Mynderse stage in several years. Written by the American humorist James Thurber, the play is actually a series of skits, of which The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is the most well-known. Also included, though, are The Night the Bed Fell , Gentlemen Shoppers , The MacBeth Murder Mystery”, and The Last Flower , among others. In the cast were Jon Belke, Brian Bishop, Karen Bohman, Troy Corsner, Mary Rose D’Eredita, Barb Grant, Tim Harrnacker, and Stacey Henry. Also, Kathleen Kuney, Tracey Larrabee, Dennis Miller, Tim Russell, Dave White and Tracy Wigsten. Helping out backstage were Eric Canfield as Chief Lighting Technician, Lisa VanDelinder as Props Manager, and Denyse Mundt as Stage Manager. Assisting in the pit were Jennifer Aicher on bass and Mark Giugliano on drums. Hopefully, the effort marks the return of a tradition at Mynderse Academy. 58 French Club Violence on the Parisian scene this past year made our trip an impossibility. The weekend commenced with Friday's football game under the lights at Bracht Field. Following the Newark Red’s kickoff to the Myndcrse Blue Devils on the 15 yard line, the Reds took an early lead in the game when they scored a touchdown in the first quarter. Another touchdown followed and made it 14-0. Myndcrse nearly retaliated when blocks by Matt Sipos, Darry l Praul, and Scott Swenson allowed Ron Stuck to run 27 yards for a first down. Although the Blue Devils spent most of the second quarter near the end zone of the Reds, M.A. did not manage to score before the half. The halftime show consisted of the cheerleaders' pompom routine, a performance by the marching band, and the announcement of the Homecoming Court. Each girl was escorted onto the field and received a rose from Mecra Shah, one of the Homecoming chairpersons.. In the third quarter, the renewed efforts of the Blue Devils paid off when they marched down the field, and Ed Caraccilo scored a touchdown, making the score 14-6. Greatly encouraged, the enthusiastic Devils continued to strive for another touchdown up to the last few minutes of the game. With fifty-three seconds left to go, Todd Mumford caught a 40 yard pass from Quarterback Jason Verkey in a valiant effort to even the score. However, the score remained unchanged and the students of Myndcrse Academy turned their thoughts to Saturday night's dance. The Homecoming Dance was very successful as students in grades 9-12 danced to music provided by the Hit Line. The Senior High Gym, decorated to the theme “Heaven In Your Eyes, created a romantic atmosphere. At 11:00 p.m., spectators gathered, and Mr. Macaluso introduced the members of the court. These girls were escorted to the King, Scott Swenson, for the crown- ing ceremony. Scott, crowned by Student Council President, Kimberly Troisi, first crowned Freshman girls, Cathy Carncvale and Holly Hartman. Tammy Goodman and Jolccne Uticonc represented the Sophomore Class, and Tracey Lar-rabec and Michele Andreas were the Juniors on the court. The Senior representatives were Christine Amidon and Tammie Westfall. Finally, Scott crowned Stephanie Hopkins, the Queen. Homecoming 1986 drew to a heavenly close as the final song of the evening was played. coni onp 102 School Possessed By Devil Spirit SENECA FALLS — The 1986 Myndcrse Academy Girls' Soccer team lived up to its stunning reputation by scalping the Waterloo Indians with a score of 8-0. This year's long awaited duel between Mynderse and Waterloo proved there was literally no contest. Due to the expert coaching of John Nicholson and the outstanding leadership of team captains, Chris Amidon, Tracy Wigsten, and Jackie Amidon, the game against Waterloo was an easy victory. The Mynderse offense stunned Waterloo by making 35 shots, while Waterloo made none. Senior Chris Amidon made two goals along with Jackie Amidon and Lisa Scialdone. Wendy Hurlburt and Stacy Henry each made a goal as well. Tracey Larrabee guarded the Mynderse goal while regular goalie, Bridget Doctuer, saw some action on the field. Due to the strong Mynderse defense, Larrabee had no opportunities to stop any goals, but she showed tremendous enthusiasm and spirit by encouraging her teammates to go all the way. With this win behind them, the Lady Blue Devils are looking forward to Sectionals. There they hope to prove their dominance again and add another winning season to their outstanding record.
