SPRINGE' :k M...... we Writing In this age of uncertainty, the importance of being optimistic and displaying a positive attitude is paramount for graduates to meet the problems and challenges of life beyond formal schooling. Our country’s history is rich with those who refused to let defeat serve as a permanent setback in their lives. They pass through their defeats and their lows by generating an attitude of positivism and the ability to see good things around them. Keep ever mindful the contributions of your family and the Mynderse faculty over the last several years. Hopefully, we have developed a sense of pride in what you have accomplished. The Board of Education and I wish you every success on the road ahead. M. Douglas Zoller Superintendent of Schools M. Douglas Zoller — Superintendent of Schools THE BOARD OF EDUCATION - Bottom Row: Mrs Marie Midey. Mrs Gloria Paris. Row 1: Mr Matthew Gallina, Mr. John Pannucci, Mrs. Marilyn Bero. Dr Herbert Holden, Mrs. Susan Willower. Row 2: Mr. Rick Kuempel, Mr. Peter Same. 3 Too often, like Gatsby, we tend to spend so much of our lives “in between time;” a foot in the past, a glance to the future. Others will say, sometines cynically, that there are really only two good places — where we’ve been and where we’re going. I would like to think that somehow your years at Mynderse Academy provided a striking four-year moment where, in a sense, time stood still, clocks froze, past and future blended somehow, but only to heighten the bittersweet things one lives through at that time, in that place. If we, the faculty, and you, our graduates, have touched each other, even slightly, with a little sentiment and a bit of intellect and a lot of wisdom, then all of our lives are ever so enriched by just having known one another. As you leave high school, try to remember the feeling of friendship which drifts out of that sensitive little allegory, Jonathon Liuingston Seagull: But overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don’t you think that we might see each other once or twice? Gerald Macaluso Principal Nobody has ever been able to say exactly what life is, because it is not the same for any two people. Perhaps that’s because life means a number of opposite things. It means fact and it means fantasy. It is as tangible as a football and as intangible as a frosty morning. It is competition, composure; happiness, sorrow; and anticipation. In today’s world it is something in more different ways to more people than it has ever been. In America today, a good life is not just a dream, it is a reality for those with goals and a willingness to work to achieve and excel. I hope your life after graduation will be a “Good Life.” David M. Geitner Assistant Principal 4 To the Class of ’83 Only a short time ago you began your education and now you are about to graduate. Some of you will go on to further education, but a great number of you students will immediately enter your life’s work. In your years at Mynderse Academy we have attempted to start you with a good foundation, hoping that with the proper start, you will go on and have great success. In closing, I wish to commend you on a job well done, and wish you the best in whatever field of endeavor you may select. Dominic Paradise, Assistant Principal Director of Athletics To the Members of the Class of ’83 1983 marks the end of your high school years. It should also be the beginning of a new adventure for you. Whether a college, the service, or a job is in your future, I trust Mynderse Academy has given you a base on which to build your life experience. The foundation is finished. In it are the studies, the teachers, the activities, the friends of your high school years. Use this foundation to expand your horizons. Let 1983 be only the start of your endeavors to be a success in your chosen field. My best wishes go with you. Not only have we obtained the required number of credits, but we have matured enough to take on the responsibilities of life. For this we bestow a tremendous amount of appreciation to the faculty and administration at Mynderse, and most important, to our parents, who have guided us through the most important years of our lives thus far. As we move on throughout life, we will always have the memories, be they good or bad, of our high school careers. These memories will enable us to make decisions, perhaps, that our lives depend on. I am glad that we have had the opportunity to receive our learning rience at Mynderse, because of its reputation as a fine educational institution. I am sure that each and every one of us, the Class of 1983, will be successful in each of our own personal endeavors. Best of luck to each member of our class in whatever the future may hold for you! When looking toward the junior year of high school, one tends to view it with apprehension. The junior year is the most important year in terms of scholastic and athletic achievements. This is the year in which one begins to decide what path he or she pursues in life. It is also a time in which schedules are heavy with courses such as chemistry and trigonometry. In terms of athletics we truly became representative of Mynderse Academy. The prevalent nature of the class of ’84 caused much of this apprehension to be overcome. Through careful planning, determination, hard work, and the use of relationships made in previous years we continued our endeavor toward excellence in all fields. This year will be remembered by us mainly because of the diligent and extra effort which we put forth. Looking toward our senior year the Class of ’84 will continue to prove its superior nature in succeeding to reach its goals. At the same time we are striving to adhere to the high standards for which Mynderse Academy has always stood. Junior Class President, Daniel China HOMEROOM 47 - a. Bottom Row: T. Burgess, J. Advisor; Brennan Copp, President. The summer of 1982, before we entered Mynderse, the hit movie E.T. portrayed a space alien unwittingly left behind on earth. He was kind and intelligent (much like us) but nearly died in the earth’s hostile environment. After much travail, E.T. finally found his way back home. Home was what made him well again. We’re off to a good start in our exploration of the world, but we’ve got a long way to go. We’ve shown real unity in planning and carrying out class projects and fund raisers. Much of the spirit behind what we’ve done is our class advisor and invaluable friend, Miss Starr. Thank you. Miss Starr! Like E.T., Mynderse’s Class of ’86 has a home — Seneca Falls. Learn E.T.’s lesson. Class of ’86. Anytime the environment gets too hostile for you, turn on your heartlight. Home is where your real friends are. That were at Boys’ State, on the campus of Morrisville College in Morrisville, NY. This week consisted of different seminars on government, plus the election of different officials in the state. Much was assimilated, but the best part of the entire week was the lasting ties of friendship that we formed. A great deal of hard work and many long hours of rehearsal were put in by a mixed cast of seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. Almost everyone who wished to participate in the success of the performance was able to, in one capacity or another. The cast, stage crew, and pit were vital parts that helped to form the pieces into an enjoyable show and more importantly, they enjoyed performing as much as the audience enjoyed watching. Although the box office suffered because it was not a classical high school musical, the community expressed its approval and congratulated the cast and crew with enthusiastic applause. Mynderse Academy presented a unique musical that year with both excellent music and comedy, a mixture that led to its success. Ac a. The guys are engrossed by Hedy’s body!! b. Our activities are numerous, as we organize and present homecoming, sponsor dances and entertainment for our school, and raise funds for various activities. We pursue the ultimate goal of breaching the abyssmal gap between the student body, the community, and the faculty. We are the student’s representatives, and thus far we have achieved our goal. Jason Branciforte President RQTflRY KIWflNIS aA Last spring, four Mynderse Academy students, Jason Branciforte, Chris Carello, Ted Zoller, and Bruce Rice were awarded the honor to attend weekly meetings of the Seneca Falls Rotary Club as Junior Rotarians. Two others, Dan Murdoch and Chris Guigliano were awarded the honor to attend weekly meetings at the Seneca Falls Kiwanis Club as Jr. Kiwanians. This entails meeting and participating in various Rotary and Kiwanis projects in the community and helping to promote the ideals of Rotary and Kiwanis. This award is very beneficial to the ones fortunate enough to receive it, because it gives a perspective of community service rarely seen by a high school student. 117 MEMORIES, MAY BE BEAUTIFUL AND YET WHAT'S TOO PAINFUL TO REMEMBER WE SIMPLY CHOOSE TO FORGET . . . 119 i iiiiiiu Raiders of the Lost Yearbook Meeting during the fourth period in a forgotten back room of the library, the staff of the Myndersian grinds out page after page of the 1983 Myndersian. Wan Until Dark The class made a profit of around $200 — in recent years the senior class only broke even. The play was directed by Miss Everett and was performed for two nights on November 19 and 20. The play was about a husband (Don Waldron) who unwittingly brought home a doll filled with heroin. His blind wife (Debbie Kuempel) is left alone with only a pesty friend's little girl (Karen Phillips) for help. Two con-men (Jason Branciforte and Ted ZoIIer) call on her posing as friends of the husband, in hopes of conning her out of the doll. In charge of the con-men is a psycho-killer (Dan Murdoch) who kills the con-men and in the final scene attempts to kill the wife. The play received excellent comments from the local press and from people who saw it. 132 NEW WINB0WS CHANGES In September the doors of Mynderse once again opened for another school year. This year brought about many changes. The ninth grade was moved to the Senior High to make room for the sixth graders in the Junior High. Mynderse was really a “full house.” Along with the changes within the building, there were changes outside as well. The old windows were replaced with new, more energy-efficient ones. Classes were switched to the Auditorium and to the library, which brought about some confusion as to where one might attend class that day. We were all lucky that it was a mild winter while the workers changed the windows. During the passing of classes one could feel the gentle, fall-like breezes instead of the normal gushes of cold air — and with the breezes came the smell of the stain that was used on the framing. After the project was completed, many people remarked that Mynderse looked good with its new “shades.” 133 f r VARSITY d.V. BASKETBALL a. Bottom Row: T. Ingalls, R. Rutz Row 1: K. Aspin, B. KING REAL ESTATE, INC. ELflSS Our high school years at Mynderse Academy will always be remembered. It was said that no teacher would take us but. . . look us now!! The class of 1983 had arrived!!! FRESHMAN: On September 4, 1979, a group of students walked through the junior high doors for their last time. For some, those from St. Pat’s, it was the first time. Now we are all a part of the freshman class of Mynderse Academy, the class of 1983. Maybe because we were in the junior high or maybe because we are such a diverse group of people, we never seemed to get together as a class that year. Under the leadership of Elly Gaudet as President; Mike Hoover, Vice-President; Irene Eno, Secretary; Janelle Bradshaw. Treasurer; and Mr. Cimochowski as advisor, we ordered 500 decals of which very few were sold and we found ourselves In debt in our freshman year, a debt that would take us two more years to get out of. Our freshman year seemed to be filled with Algebra homework, of trying to figure out if x and y are equal, staring at the moon for our only required year of science, and getting writer’s cramp from Mrs. Osterhout’s “Hooterscope.” All in all, we knew that this was for our own good and by the second quarter it all seemed routine. Many changes weren’t just occuring with us and within us. but also around us. This year was the first year that Mr. Geitner was Vice-Principal, a change from physical education teacher. But a little farther from home, the American Embassy was taken over in Tehran, Iran — a saga for the hostages that would not conclude until over a year later. Our freshman year was filled with many decisions for our future years at Mynderse and even further. Whether to join those brave souls in Regents or to have a free summer at the end of our junior year, was on all of our minds. Soon everyone seemed to find out in what direction they were heading and with Mr. Rice there to make sure we stuck with it, we settled in to the school year. Now that we were sure of where we were going, our freshman year seemed to zoom right by us. Homecoming representatives; Sue Tarnow and Dawn Felice Football score: MA 0 Waterloo 21 Float: 4th S0PH0M0RE: September 3, 1980 brought the class of 1983 to the senior high — finally we were a part of the high school.’’ We settled down to work after a fun-filled summer. Chris Carello was elected President; Dan Murdoch, Vice-President; Steve Piscetelli, Secretary; and Janelle Bradshaw, Treasurer. These officers along with our class advisor, Mr. Henry, and the class made efforts to decrease our deficit and put the class into the black, but somehow things never got off the ground and we were still in debt. We all just seemed to let this pass us by, because we had much more important things to worry about. Much of our time was spent doing biology labs for such wonderous things as frogs and earthworms. Mr. Skinner with his moo-cows and Mrs. Massey assured us that somewhere this would all fit into our daily lives. What we didn’t spend on biology we spent on Mrs. Padunov and Euclid’s geometry. Was that a perpendicular to angle bisects the angle or the line segment, or was that only in a triangle but in a parallelogram it didn’t matter? Somehow, along with our other required courses of English and social studies, we seemed to live through the year academically and we all looked forward to our junior year at Mynderse. In our Sophomore year there seemed to be even more decisions to be made that would affect us in the years to come. These seemed even more important as these decisions would affect us for the rest of our lives — whether to go to B.O.C.E.S. or to continue with the Regents program or to take business courses or to take non Regents — all had to be considered. Do we want to go to college? If yes, a four-year or a two-year? AH this made us realize that high school would not last forever and guidance appointments were looked forward to rather than dreaded. Inside Mynderse there were also many changes. It was announced that this would be Mr. Markell’s last year, Mrs. Krueger, the English teacher, left to have a baby, and Coach Farney coached the Varsity basketball instead of Coach Nicholson. Outside Mynderse there were also many changes. President Carter was defeated and America had a new President, an actor from California, Ronald Reagan. The hostages were released from Iran — a joyful moment for all Americans. And for a joyful moment for the world — the Prince of England took a bride, Diana Spencer married Charles Windsor. On a sadder note for the world of music, John Lennon was shot and killed in front of his own home. The world kept moving and so did the class of 1983 — to our junior year, one said to be the most important and challenging of all years. The class of 1983 was ready for it. Homecoming representatives: Debbie Cook and Amy Brown Football score: MA 12 Waterloo 16 Float: 4th •HIST0RY dUNIQR: When the doors of Mynderse opened in September. 1981, the class of 1983 walked through the other” doors for the last year and we walked into the hardest year of our high school career. We faced many Regents at the end of the year and many decisions for our final year of high school and beyond had to be made — this time with more definite plans. After settling down to work, we noted a few changes at Mynderse. Mr. Gerald Macaluso had become principal. He was strict and enforced many school policies that had not been enforced regularly, and even set some of his own policies — calling one down to the office to find out why you were late and making sure that it never happened again. Mr. Macaluso believed in dealing with the problem and solving it. and that he did. The class of 1983 found a friend in Mr. Macaluso. a friend that always supported us and helped us. Many changes also occurred in the teaching staff. Mr. Graebell left as social studies and drivers education teacher. The English department went through many changes; 4 out of the 9 teachers had been replaced. Mr. Winslow took Mrs. Krueger’s place. Mr. Heptig replaced Mr. O'Louglin, Miss Burcroff was replaced by Miss Everett. Mr Williams replaced Mr. Hackman. The language department also had many changes. Mrs. Osborn was back, but Mrs. Keller stayed only half a year. A new Italian teacher was also brought in. Deacon Rino from St. Pat’s. Most of us had our driver’s license our junior year, and we spent much of our time driving instead of walking. Much of our time was spent driving away from Seneca Falls, as Seneca Falls was not the most exciting place to be. But our licenses also helped us out academically. The traditional junior year research paper was assigned and many nights were spent meeting friends at Eisenhower or Hobart for a fun-filled evening of research. Along with the changes at Mynderse and academically, we also changed as a class. We seemed more together as a class. The class of 1983 was out of debt and we even saw a profit. Our class advisor, Mr. Henry, along with our class officers. Amy Brown. President; Mary Beth Gus” Foster. Vice-President; Janelle Bradshaw. Treasurer; and Shera Fineco, Secretary; showed a lot of hard work and helped pull the class together. Our junior year was the last year for Mr. Dickieson and for Mrs. Smith. For those planning to take physics, it was a moment of uncertainty, as Mr. Dickieson was such a fine teacher. Most students took the plunge and signed up anyhow. For those students taking business courses, some already had had Mrs. Smith, and knew what a good teacher she was. Both teachers are sadly missed at Mynderse. As our junior year came to a close, we looked forward to June with mixed emotions. In one way. it brought a close to our junior year and the beginning of our last year of high school, our senior year, and June also brought Regents. This year brought the addition of two Regents, English and social studies, along with the regular science and math. For some even an additional one was added, for those taking a language, they had their language Regents. Somehow we lived through it all, and a fun-filled summer of partying awaited us — the last year of our high school career had begun and we didn’t wait a moment of time to celebrate it. Homecoming Representatives: Karen Phillips and Shera Fineco Football score: MA 0 Waterloo 6 Float: 2nd SENIOR: September 9. 1982 was a special day for the class of nineteen hundred and eighty-three, it was our last first day of school. Now every day was our “last” — for some the last day of school, for others it was the last” day of their high school career We all seemed to realize thus, so we made this year the best of all of our years. We were finally a class — we had it all. Our senior year brought many changes for us. The Doors were ours to protect and defend as well as The Lounge We were honored to be the last class to have this privilege. Since this was the year that the Intermediate School was closed and the sixth graders moved to the junior high, the freshmen were moved to the senior high, making things a little inconvenient, but not totally impossible. Among the other changes that occurred during our senior year, was the window change The old windows were taken out for more modern, energy-efficient ones. There were two major faculty changes that we faced when we returned to school. Mr Dickieson's position was taken over by Dr Peone. Dr. Peone, a Mynderse graduate himself, had a way of taking the difficult subject of physics and making it seem easy and fun. Also being added to the Mynderse staff was Mr. Gtovannini. another Mynderse graduate returning home. Mr. Govannim replaced Mrs. Smith in the business department. We lost our lounge early in the year and regained it after Christmas break. While the work was being done on the windows, the workmen’s equipment was being stored in the lounge area, so with the help of Mr. Macaluso. the lounge was moved to the cafeteria and the Christmas tree went up as planned The class of 1983 was always known for its parties, and in our senior year we threw some good ones. Pat Scanlon had the first. Somehow, it never seemed to end. Whenever one went to Pat’s there always seemed to be a party going on. Everyone took time out to go to Andre's toga party. We looked like we belonged In Roman and Greek times, but by the end of the evening no one knew what time it really was. Since it was a mild winter, there wasn’t much skiing or sledding, but we did manage to get a couple of weekends of tobogganing in down at the Park Since we had no snow activities, we occupied our time in other ways. The Jury” was always In attendance to make sure that Mynderse was always well-represented, and to make sure that the refs and the administration were fair in their decisions The Jury was well-known far and wide The cornfield crew also put its two cents In. but It was more like its two eggs in. as they hit the Gyde bus on its way back home But. we did have something to be proud of. the Mynderse Girls’ soccer team was league champs. Since the spring came so early, we all seemed to get spring fever that much earlier Our eyes turned to Senior Ball May seventh was a perfect night for Senior Ball. The band. Home Cookin', played well and all the right songs for the moment We all wanted the moment to last forever, but like all good things, it had to end. Many of us went to the EJks for Afterglow There we danced and talked some more, trying to hold on to the night as long as possible. But. Afterglow also ended, and we all left — some to our homes, some to a friend’s house, some to a party, and some out to breakfast. Senior Ball was really a Full House.” Our last year in high school was spent deciding what we wanted to do In the future If college was our plan. Mr. Rice made sure we applied early to increase our chances. Then he assured us that an answer was coming. If college wasn't our “thing at the moment. Mr. Rice made sure that we did plan on doing something in the future. The class of 1983 owes a lot to Mr Rice and the Guidance Department for the guidance that they have given us in our four years at Mynderse After Senior Ball the only thing to look forward to was GRADUATION!!! The next few weeks were celebrated to the fullest. We took our Senior Trip, participated in Baccalaureate, the only thing left to do was actually graduate. June 26. 1983 was our day The class of nineteen-hundred and eighty-three graduated — we made it!! Graduation was only a beginning for us. The foundation that we received at Mynderse is a strong one With our class officers. Peter Soda. President. Tracey Allan. Vice-President; Debbie Cook. Secretary; Patty Uber. Treasurer; and Miss Becker as advisor, along with the thought that Mynderse will always be there for us. we know that the class of 1983 will go far. We may now all be in different places — college, job, armed forces - but we will always be together in our memories and in our hearts Homecoming representatives: Tracey Allan and Becky Van Kirk Homecoming Queen: Jill Henry Football score: MA 20 Waterloo 0 Float: 3rd Senior Ball King: Jason Branciforte; Prince: Chris Carello .
