New Subiect . . . New Method . . . New Teacher . . . SCIENCE DEP RTMENT EXPANDS SCIENCE DEPARTMENT FACULTY Discussing some of the changes in the Department are: Mr. Frank Cooley, Mr. James V. Pierce, Mr. Robert Skinner and Mr. Samuel Dickieson. I4 This year the Science Department expanded to include a new subject and new methods of teach- ing in order to keep pace with this fast moving field. Mr. James Pierce, besides instructing General Science, spent his afternoons advising the elemen- tary teachers on the purchase of equipment and material to improve elementary science curriculum. This was done in answer to a national push to pro- mote elementary science. New to the department this year was Mr. Robert Skinner who taught General Science and Biology labs. During the second semester, one of Mr. Skin- ner's science classes conducted individual projects instead of having regular classwork. Mr. Frank Cooley, in addition to his regular class in Biology, taught one class of Physics-Chemistry. This course combined the practicable aspects of both sciences. To leave more time free for labs, the Chemistry classes under Mr. Samuel Dickieson were organized into two lecture classes. The Physics class, also un- der lVlr. Dickieson, was small enough to be held in a regular class.

Mr. Linwood Kemp, Mrs. Francis Van Epps, Mrs. Shirley Catchpole, and Mrs. Anne Seld examine class projects. EW LA GUAGE CDLIRSE ADDED Mynderse Academy has an ever expanding program in the field of foreign languagesi This year lVlr. Linwood Kemp joined the faculty and' a fourth course in French was added to the curriculum. French IV was introduced in order to pro- vide a more complete study of the most popular language in the department. Similar to a first year college course for entrants who have al- ready studied French for three years, it com- bines a study of French grammar with the read- ing of various types of French literature by World-famous French authors. Under the guidance of Mr. Kemp, several stu- dents made special studies of the cultural and social aspects related to the Spanish language as it is spoken in Mexico. Personal experiences and first-hand information was provided by the instructor as a result of his visit to Mexico dur- ing the summer of 1963. The classical language of Latin has been taught in Seneca Falls since the opening of the Seneca Falls Academy in l834. Through its study, students obtain an appreciation for Roman history and customs as well as a better under- standing of the derivation of many English Words.
