HISTORY DEPARTMENT FACULTY Row One: Br. Billy Morrison, Mr. Kenneth Mitchell, Mr. Raymond Bullisg Row Two: Mrs. Flora No- vak, Miss Emily Smith, Mrs. Lil- lian Oliver Students Respond to Historic Weekend On Friday afternoon, November 22, 1963, stu- dents at Mynderse Academy joined with students throughout the nation in living through the most tragic days of the year. With the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, many of us became aware that this was a moment to remember, a moment in history. One more page had been writ- ten in the textbook of time, courses studied in the History Department seemed to have more relevance to our lives. Some of the freshman students, who are required to take Social Studies, were greeted in September by Mrs. Flora Novak who rejoined our faculty after an absence of several years. Sophomore students in World History were in- troduced to a new series of nine study lessons de- veloped to benefit the non-academic students. lt is comprised of daily lessons which are planned as complete studies. Juniors take American History I which is con- cerned with our American heritage-our victories and failures, our great men and women. Seniors continue with American History ll which emphasizes the roles that economics and politics play in our government. Critical thinking was en- couraged on contemporary international problems which included tactics used by the East and the West. I3

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY Standing: Mrs. Margaret Rosenkrans, Mr. Theodore Kohinkeg Sealed: Mrs. Lucille Plummer, Mrs. Doris Wilson, Mrs. Louise Shannon English Students View the Classics The English Department works to encourage an appreciation of the English language in hoth prose and poetry and to increase our knowledge of good grammar. This year the department used more audio-visual methods than in previous years. Two outstanding films were A Canterbury Tale and Orson Wells, production of Macbeth. Because of the overcrowded conditions in classes, a new position was filled by Mrs. Rosenkrans. In the field of literature, English I students study Ivanhoe and English II students read Julius Caesar. English III students wade through Moby Dick, The Scarlet Letter, The Bridge of Sari Luis Rey, and The Red Badge of Courage. English IV students charge into Macbeth and four other English classics including Pride and Prejudice, and ranging from Chaucer to Virginia Woolf. English IV also con- trasts Macbeth with Emperor lones and Romeo and Juliet with West Side Story.

New Subiect . . . New Method . . . New Teacher . . . SCIENCE DEP RTMENT EXPANDS SCIENCE DEPARTMENT FACULTY Discussing some of the changes in the Department are: Mr. Frank Cooley, Mr. James V. Pierce, Mr. Robert Skinner and Mr. Samuel Dickieson. I4 This year the Science Department expanded to include a new subject and new methods of teach- ing in order to keep pace with this fast moving field. Mr. James Pierce, besides instructing General Science, spent his afternoons advising the elemen- tary teachers on the purchase of equipment and material to improve elementary science curriculum. This was done in answer to a national push to pro- mote elementary science. New to the department this year was Mr. Robert Skinner who taught General Science and Biology labs. During the second semester, one of Mr. Skin- ner's science classes conducted individual projects instead of having regular classwork. Mr. Frank Cooley, in addition to his regular class in Biology, taught one class of Physics-Chemistry. This course combined the practicable aspects of both sciences. To leave more time free for labs, the Chemistry classes under Mr. Samuel Dickieson were organized into two lecture classes. The Physics class, also un- der lVlr. Dickieson, was small enough to be held in a regular class.
