They consider matters of finance, building, cur- riculum, and staff, and they set policy to which the administration of the school adheres. Participation in the activities of the New York State School Boards Asso- ciation and the Syracuse University School Boards Institute keeps Board members informed about current problems of schools and provides help in seeking solutions to these problems. Members of our Board of Education attend meetings of these two organizations. The average length of service of the present members of the Board of Educa- tion is IO years. The committee meetings, regular and special meetings, the annual district meetings, and travel to meetings outside the district requires each member to give an average of 80 hours per year in service to this community for which he receives no pay. Such unselfish public service is too often forgotten by people in the community. MR.
