f evelops journalistic abilities The editorial set-up on the M yerS park staff differed this year from previous years. In former years, there were two editorsg how- ever, this year there was a single Editor-in- Chief who was responsible for all the work done by the staff. Other editors were the Business Managers, Features Editor, and Sports Editor. Three new positions were created: Managing Editor, who arranged the layout of the paperg Copy Editor, who proofread copy, and Assistant Business Manager, who assisted the Business Man- ager. Ten reporters completed the staff. Their job was to report pertinent news stories, write interesting feature articles, and sell ads. Regular columns in the newspaper were Spark Plugs written by Ellen Martin, Stu- dent of the Issue feature, and Sidelines by Caroline Elliot. Candid news concerning different students was related in Spark Plugs and Sidelines. Outstanding Seniors were honored by being selected as Student of the Issue. The sports section kept stu- dents aware of team and individual stand- ings in all sports at Myers Park. Through a course in Journalism, sopho- mores and juniors received training for placement on the newsp-aper staff. journal- ism taught the principles of editing and publishing a high school newspaper. Editor-in-Chief Barbara Dowd and Mr. Sizer, the newspaper advisor, discuss the 'Sparlfs recent mail. The editor is responsible for the arrangement of the paper and for writing most editorials. Reviewing back issues of the newspaper for unusual ideas, Managing Editor Sally Ervin and Features Editor Caroline Elliot compare editions. The position of Managing Editor was created this year. 'Spark staff By publishing ten issues of the MyerSpark this year, the 'Spark staff enabled students to be aware of the activities at Myers Park and of the achievements of individual stu- dents. The 'Spark sponsored the annual election of a L'il Abner and Daisey Mae for the Sadie Hawkins Dance in April. Mone- tary votes were counted for each candidate and the proceeds placed in the 'Spark treas- ury. The 'Spark also was responsible for the election of a King and Queen of Hearts for the February Valentine's Day Dance. One of the largest issues of the 'Spark came out before the Christmas holidays. Money was raised for the extra-large edition from ads bought by clubs, homerooms, and organiza- tions in the school. These clubs are designed to com- plement the students' classroom studies. Jean Paul Loevenbruck, an exchange stu- dent from France, was the first speaker for the French Club.
