Language Club plays, parties strengthen classroom knowledge Students broadened their scope of learning through membership in the foreign language clubs. Each club held stimulating programs to strengthen the classroom knowledge of its members. French students proved their writing and acting talent as they presented original French plays. They displayed a French nativity scene during Christmas. Latin Week was the highlight of Latin club activ- ities. With a slave auction, plays, and the annual ban- T7 quet, the members proved that Latin is not dead. The VN-s..,,x club honored Virgil at a birthday party in his memory, and sponsored one of the basketball sock hops. Spanish club members learned about Spanish and European customs from students who spoke to them. At their Christmas party they celebrated with traditional Spanish dancing and by breaking the traditional pinata. Debate Society members enter regional, state competition Having as its purpose the encouragement of skillful debating at Myers Park, the Debate Society brought credit to the school by the performance of its members in various forensic contests. Practice debates allow members to perfect speeches to serve as criteria for choosing entries in contests. Margaret James, Jan Wuertenberger, and Caryl Rehm. 5. During the first semester, the activities emphasized research on subjects to be debated in spring matches. Club meetings featured discussions led by the officers on techniques of skillful debating. Practice debates were held in the latter part of Janu- ary, allowing members to perfect their presentations. In February the competition began. Teams were entered in several contests and festivals, including the state- wide contest, the South-Eastern Debating League at Emory University, and festivals at Wake Forest and Winthrop Colleges.
