Recognition for intellectual achievement revealed that many students had striven for quality while at Myers Park. The wide range of scholarships extended from the National Merit Scholarship to the P.T.A. Scholar- ship. Students who received these awards gained out- ward and in many cases valuable recognition for their attainment. Induction into Myers Park's chapter of the National Honor Society climaxed for the top fifteen per cent of the senior class three years of outstanding achievement in both scholastic and extra-curricular endeavors. But scholarship in its true sense is not recognition, but earnest incentive to learn. The scholars of the school could be found in the library reading poetry selections for pure enjoyment, in the laboratory after school delv- ing into the realms of natural and physical sciences, or generally supplementing the classroom lecture. It is, then, this fundamental desire to exercise the mind to one's ability that is scholarship.
