'Spark voices student opinions, records activities With deadlines forever looming ahead, the 'Spark staff worked feverishly to put out each bi-weekly issue. Re- porters labored over news stories and editorials. Last- minute changes were made to get the scoop on the latest news events. Subscriptions were sold this year through a newspaper fee which entitled each student to receive copies of the paper. Keeping the students informed of all the campus news was not the only objective of the 'Spark It also gave recognition to outstanding students and provided a means for individuals to voice their opinions. Special editions were printed at Christmas and in May when graduating seniors were honored with special features, including the History of the Class of 1961. Staff members did not confine their talents to journal- istic efforts, however. The 'Spark supported a school project to contribute Christmas cards which they sent to local nursing homes. Sponsoring a contest to elect Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae for the Sadie Hawkins Dance capped the spring activities. Staff reporters usually spend 6th period working on copy but after each bi-weekly issue appears, everyone takes time to read the 'Spark and to experience the excitement of seeing their own ideas in print. Editor Susan Stephenson with advisors, Mr. Browne and Miss Freeman, held numerous conferences with the major staff members to make plans and decisions. Wfith originality as the keynote, staff members decided on numerous innovations. Choosing a letterpress book instead of offset was a major decision. An aid for the photographers was the well-organized system devised for planning, scheduling and taking pictures. Section editors worked with new type for copy and captions, and planned layouts with set margins. School activities were covered in two sections, Organizations and Clubs. Another addition was the Student Life section that in- cluded Honors and Awards. By placing a booth at the P. T. A. barbecue, Business Manager jo Ann Elliot was able to sell sponsorships and ads. For the tenth anni- versary edition of the Mzzrmzzg, the staff chose the theme A Decade of Progress. Section editors: Clubs Editor Diane Crockett, Features Editor Mary Van W'agner, and Organizations Editor Pat Cox. E' 3 , 4 o 4 ,at v5,,K
