Choir presents Messiah at traditional yule assembly Throughout the halls of L. A. singing was heard as the choir and chorus rehearsed during fourth and fifth period. Students heard the result of this practice at the traditional Christmas assembly when graduates of Myers Park returned to join the choir in presenting a portion of Handel's Alertiizb. Choir and chorus mem- bers also combined with the orchestra to present a concert in December at Myers Park Elementary School. Activities of the choir did not end with school func- tions, for they also presented a program at the S 84 W Cafeteria. Members traveled to the District Contest held in Hickory and later to the State Festival in Greens- boro, North Carolina, where the group received high ratings for their musical accomplishments. Choir of- ficers, President Deno Elliott, Vice President Gayle George, Secretary Carol Holden, Treasurer Bing Vick, and Mr. Cronstedt made plans for these musical per- formances. As a climax to the year's activities, the choir performed at the Baccalaureate and commencement services. Another vocal group, the Monotones, was formed this year. Outstanding boys from the choir composed this group which practiced after school to perfect its repertoire. One of their first performances was at the Honor Society Tapping in October. This popular group added to the acclaim of Myers Park's music department. Page I8 Choir officers are: First row: Vice President Gayle George, Librarian Gayle Heston. l rr? Orchestra plays at sixth annual Christmas Assembly Practicing during fifth period each day, the orchestra worked to attain perfection of tone. In the weeks before concerts, rehearsals often extended into night sessions. President Caroline Pilcher, Vice President Mac Smith, Secretary-Treasurer Alice McNeill, and Director Mr. Mims planned programs and made all arrangements for the orchestrais performances. Wforking together, the orchestra, choir, and chorus pre- sented an impressive performance of Handel's rlrlwpmzli and other seasonal music at the traditional Christmas assembly. Mr. Mims initiated a new tradition this year by inviting graduate students of Myers Park to return to perform with the orchestra for this annual assembly program. In October and again in the spring, the orchestra pro- vided music for the National Honor Society tapping assemblies. During December the group appeared in concert at Myers Park Elementary School. Members named to the All-State Orchestra performed at East Carolina College in February and at the Music Educators Association meeting in Asheville in April.
