Muskogee Junior College Since its creation in l92O by the local Board of Education, the Muskogee Junior college grew steadily as a one-year institution until l928, when it was established as a two-year institution, sponsored by the University of Oklahoma. Being a liberal arts school, no terminal courses are offered, but those given are equivalent to the same courses offered in the University. Through the personal attention of Dean Roy L. Gittinger, who visited the Junior College classes, through suggestions from Dr. S. R. Hadsell of the English Department, through aid from Dean S. W. Reaves, the courses of- fered were carefully arranged. The advantages accruing to students by virtue of their attendance at the one-year Junior College led the patrons of the school to make an insistant de- mand that the one-year college be extended to a two- year Junior College. In response to this urgent re- quest, the Board of Education, therefore, early in the spring of l928 invited Mr. George C. Wells, State High School Inspector, Dean Roy L. Gittinger, Uni- versity of Oklahoma, and Dr. Paul B. Sears, Science Department of the University, to visit the Junior College and to make definite recommendations for the establishment of the two-year course. Upon the recommendations of the above three men, the State Board of Education recommended that it be placed on the accredited list of State Colleges. Since then it has been regularly inspected and approved by the accrediting committee consisting of J. Andrew Holly, chairman of the Committee on Higher Institutions of 9 i Learning, Roy L. Gittinger, Dean of Administration, University of Okahoma, N. Conger, Dean of School of Education, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College. From May l93O to May l938, certificates of completion of two years work have been granted by the Board of Education in Muskogee to 222 students. The school is governed by the students and their stud- ious attitude. The only student office is that of presi- dent of the student body. The school emblem and nickname is Green Frogs. Approximately two hours of preparation is spent for every one hour of recitation. It is interesting to note that over fifty percent of the boys attending the school this year, are employed part time, their schol- astic standing, however, remains high. This truly pointsgvout the desire for education now and later by the students.
