Homecoming 1958 Participants in Homecoming, 1958, will long remember -this glorious weekend so successfully planned by co-chairmen Nancy Clarke and Don Pearson. Festivities were opened Friday even- ing with a pep rally honoring the queen and her attendants. Even an overcast Saturday after- noon did not dampen the spirits of those who cheered the Muskies to victory over Wooster. Announcement of prizes came at half-time. Fol- lowing the theme, “Lingering Lines,” the Kona and Stag Clubs placed first in the float division, while the F. A. D. and Alban Clubs first in the house decorations. Muskingum’s Winter Formal, one of the biggest events of the year, was sponsored by the All-College Committee and held under the capable supervision of Susan Wright and Marty Runkle. The dance decorations created a lovely ball room illusion with painted eighteenth century portraits, beautiful draperies, and live pine trees. A swirling silver ball spun from the ceiling re- flecting many colored lights onto the dance floor and creating a mystical background for couples. who danced to music by the “Ohians.” White programs were given as keepsakes. “Something Wonderful” was an evening that no one will forget. Upon entering the “Villa De Pompey” we found ourselves in a Roman garden where tall, white columns sur- rounded a throne. Beautiful pink cherry trees grew beside a bubbling fountain and potted palms hid smiling couples. Many painted murals gave us a peek into the “Villa De Pompey” where a fashionable ball was being given. The students in our garden danced on a smooth mosaic floor to the music of Dan Belloc and his orchestra. The girls each received white leather pro- gram trimmed in gold to be kept as a remem- brance. Soon the magic garden of the “Villa De Pompey” drifted away with only a memory of the tribute to the seniors. Patty Jo Davidson and Bud Cosby are to be complimented on their supervision of Sejuna. On October 10 the wom- en’s gym was decorated on one wall with a large mural painting of a tropical sunset. The orange rays of the sun illuminated the queen’s throne which was surrounded by tropical vines. Refresh- ments were served to the couples during the in- termission as a vocal soloist and a vocal quartet provided entertainment. In its weekly meetings the Y pre- sented a wide variety of programs relating to world problems and the relevance that Christianity has for their solution. The Y.M.C.A. played an im- portant part in campus activities including sponsor- ing the World University Service Drive, Spiritual Emphasis Week, and other programs. The Beta Chi Club is the newest of Muskin- gum’s social clubs. Founded in April 1958 by eigh- teen girls, the club now resides at 157 Montgomery Boulevard with their housemother Mrs. Aiken. The first task the girls undertook was to establish a constitution, goals, and standards. Their charter was granted at their dinner dance, the club’s first social function. Since then they have adopted a crest, several songs, and a pin. Despite its short existence, the Beta Chi blue and gray has already decorated many social func- tions. The Sadie Hawkins dance, Christmas Party, and Lounge Party will long be remembered as ex- citing events of the club’s first social year. JRO PAR IN. In this year, the club’s forty-fifth, we have experienced fun and fellowship as we have passed through functions of the club. The planning and work of our Homecoming committees resulted in our placing in both house and float decorations. It was made a more eventful occasion with Jane Furbay’s serving as attendant to the queen. Various occasions added to the good spirit of F.A.D. — teas, picnics, senior dinner. The highlights of this game were a Geneva fumble recovered by Terry Powell and a pass intercep- tion by Chuck Beach. Sophomore Cannonball Cooper scored both Muskie touchdowns. Cooper’s second extra point attempt was good making the final score 13-7. The new ruling on scoring extra points were responsible for the Muskies only loss of the season. Muskingum led Akron until late in the fourth quarter when the Zips staged a determined 99 yard drive for their lone tally. Gambling for two points the Akronites hit pay dirt and won by an 8-7 score. Retaliating after the loss to Akron, the Muskies defeated tradition- al rival Denison for the first time since 1955. The many Muskies, who migrated to Granville to see the team dominate play throughout the game and win by a 33-15 score, saw what was perhaps the best play of the season. After a slow start Muskingum finally turned the Findlay game into a complete rout. Cooper scored thirty-two points as Muskingum brand- ed the Oilers their first loss of the season, 48-15. 113 114 Bill Cooper and Coach Sherman admire trophy presented to Cooper as outstanding back in the Ohio Conference. After stopping the Lutheran’s touchdown bid on their first series of plays the Muskies were in complete charge of the game. Capital scor- ed only once and this was set up by a penalty and pass play. Another away game, this time at Heidel- berg, found the Muskingum bench strength the deciding factor. Although the first half was scoreless, the Muskie machine jelled in the second half to down the Student Princes 22-0. Homecoming was very successful as Muskingum defeated the Scots of Wooster 34-0 in a hard fought and exciting game. Wooster threatened to score several times but the Muskingum defense stopped all drives short of pay dirt. The 31-16 victory over Marietta College marked a lineman as potential backfield ma- terial. Guard Larry Davis intercepted a pass and carried the ball twenty-five yards for one of the touchdowns. Muskingum was never in serious trouble although the Pioneers scored all of their points in the last four minutes. The final:game at Mount Union proved to be one of the most‘exciting of the season. The first half ended with the Muskies leading 7-6. The second half was scoreless but Muskingum defense was given a thorough work out. ts Oo — _ Chick Beach Frank Graves Barry Montgomery Dave Myers Quarterback Tackle n Center The Muskies finished the 1958-1959 foot- ball campaign with eight victories and only Doug Palmer Guard one defeat. The ruling on the extra point at- tempts proved to be the downfall of this de- termined Muskingum team in the loss to Ak- ron, and proved successful to Wittenberg as they clinched the Ohio Conference champion- ship with a 7-6 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. However the 6-1 conference mark earned sec- ond place in the fourteen team conference. Four Muskingum players were honored for their contributions to this successful team. Senior Dave Myers was named honorary cap- tain. Bill Cooper and Barry Montgomery were named to the conference first team, while Bill Frazier was named to the second team. Many additional Muskies received hon- orable mention. To climax this season, Bill Cooper, received the Mike Gregory award as outstanding back in the Ohio Conference and eae | : : erry Powell was named by his teammates as Muskingum’s Guard most valuable player. idiom Poke 117 118 Scie Row 1: L. The fighting Muskies opened their 1958-59 season with an easy win over Western Reserve. The closest game of the year was the game with previously unbeaten Capital in which the Musk- ies triumphed 68-65. In beating Capital Muskingum also avenged last year’s 65-64 loss. Muskingum also sought and gained revenge for losses to Denison and Geneva by triumphing 66-60 and 90-87 respectively. The Muskies journeyed to Bluffton during Christ- mas vacation to take part in the holiday tournament and came out on top winning their two games. Leroy Beil led the Muskie attack against Bluffton College scoring 22 points. He was ably supported by Larry Young and Dick McClelland with 18 and 11 points respectively. Larry Young headed the scoring this time for Muskingum with 24 points. Leroy Beil, Dave Irvin, and Dick CcClel- land were also in the double figures for the Musk- ies. It is interesting to note that although either Beil, Young, or Irvin, copped scoring honors in points. Leroy Beil, Dave Irvin, and Dick McClel- Don Benadum both scored high consistently and copped scoring honors at least one game apiece, Walt Harrop Dave Irvin John MacMillan showing the balance of point distribution among the Muskies. Another note of interest is that not only the entire starting five but the entire team, with the exception of John MacMillan, who will be lost through graduation, will be back next year. Larry Young, 5-11, who sparked the team throughout the year was the only player under six feet tall. This illustrates that Coach Burk- holder and his fighting Muskies will be some- thing to watch in the near future. Dick McClelland Darrell Shanks Wayne Strong Max White Larry Young Y. Marring a perfect record was a 12-12 tie with Wooster. The grapplers compiled a total of 178 points to their opponents 41. Four Muskies, Cal Walker, Lloyd Smail, Andy Shinoski, and Phil Wen- ger, remained undefeated in dual meets. The Muskie tankers were twice defeated by Wooster but showed improvement when they lost by a smaller margin the second meet which was at Wooster. Muskingum also lost to Akron but again showed improvement and great desire. The final meet with Wittenberg, one of the top powers in the Conference, proved that the Muskie tankers had improved still more as they went down to defeat, 62-23, and witnessed the setting of two new pool and school records at Wittenberg. As the team lost no one by graduation and the interest is very good, Muskingum may in the near future sport a swim team of which it can be justly proud. i HM: f Row 1: Mrs. Richey, V. Kloots, J.
