There exists between it and the students a spirit of friend- liness, cooperation, and understanding. This is due only to the member’s exceptional abil- ity to co-ordinate the liberal arts education with each student’s needs. A. Message From President ROBERT N. MONTGOMERY The President I am happy to write these words of greeting to all who may see this Muscoljuan. I think the ed- itors have done a splendid piece of work portray- ing the college life of today. This has been a year of progress. The College Development Program continues to go forward. One of the tangible evidences of this program is the construction of the New Upperclass Women’s Residence Hall which is nearing completion. Our achievements in academic life and such activities as athletics, debate, and music have been out- standing. We are proud of our students and faculty. For those of you who are not familiar with Muskingum, as you look through these pages I hope you will realize the worth of our college. For those of you who know Muskingum and will scan these pages, I trust that they will recall to your mind happy memories of days spent here. I believe that these memories will grow more precious as years go by. We look to the future with confidence. Vice-Presidents “Doc Bob” has two very capable vice-presidents to assist him during the year. Dr. Glenn McConagha, the Administrative Vice-President, ably supervises and coordinates public, personal, and academic relations. The business affairs are expertly handled by J. Knox Montgomery. Their com- bined effort keeps the college operat- ing smoothly. Under a new system. adopted by Student Council last fall, cheerleaders were judged on a point basis by the members. Other events were the Cover Girl Contest, traffic safety program, and the Mock Political Convention. President ROBERT LINDER 16 Community Council Under the co-chairmenship of Dr. McConagha and Robert Linder, Community Council took an active place this year on campus. Two projects sponsored by the council were an all-college supper, held in honor of the champion football team, and bringing “Hollywood for a Day” to Muskingum. The group made the selection of Who’s Who, entered a float in the All-American City parade, and discussed plans for limiting the number of activities present on campus. First Row: C. D. Morehead, C. Danny Capozzoli, Treas. Barb Airgood, Pres. Bruce Henderson, Sec. Diane Hendershott. It just doesn’t seem possible we are about to grad- uate from Muskingum. Surely, we all can say that these past four years have been the happiest years of our lives, and we’ll never forget the many wonder- ful friends that we have made during this time. Thanks should be awarded to those who have con- tributed to the happiness and success of our college career. We all feel we have progressed nearer to our goals. A section of the choir provided music for chapel services and other services throughout the year. The most important activity of the choir was the Spring Concert Tour. This year the Choir presented con- certs in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, followed by a home concert. Ban The Band, under the direction of Professor Raymond Zepp, displayed wonderful spirit and originality during the football season. Programs were presented at the football games with special emphasis given to Homecoming, Dad’s Day, and Migration Day to Wooster. The National Collegiate Players take an active part in Muskingum Players, they are Lois Miller, Joretta Brown, Roberta Dietrick, and Bruce Henderson. 72 The Junior Plays Last year’s junior play was entitled “The Rivals.” It was a delightful comedy with a French setting. “Goodby, My Fancy,” a three-act comedy by Fay Kanin, was presented in January of this year under the direction of Miss Mary Elizabeth Johnson. The colorful excitement of a col- lege commencement week- end, the unique student and faculty personalities in- volved in it, the conflict be- tween sentimental attach- ments and strong liberal beliefs in the mind of an honored congresswoman — all combined to make the play a successful, highly entertaining production. Freshmen Sophomore Plays On December 7 and 8, the Introduction tc Theatre Class, under the direction of Miss Martha Moore, presented an evening of one-act plays. The three plays presented were “Churchstreet,” the story of a young playwright whose friends became the tragic players in his play; “Foot- falls,” the dramatic story of a blind shoemaker; and “John Turner Davis,’’ the heart- warming story of an orphan who finds parents in the South. Both “Footfalls” and “John Turner Davis” have .been presented on television. i yy fa = Xa NS First Row: Bruce Henderson, Rich Clark, Dr. Charles R. Layton, Linda Esmond, Ed Carlson, Irwin Jennings. Placing on the All-Ohio Conference team were Howdy Collins, Rudy Visnich and Joe McDaniel. Placing on the All-Ohio team were Joe McDaniel, Howdy Collins, Rudy Visnich, Max Bayer, and Jack Lofstrom. Named to the Little All-American Team were Bob Carlisle, Rudy Gerlach, and Rudy Visnich. Rudy Visnich and Howdy Collins were chosen as the honorary captains of the team, and Joe McDaniel was elected as the most valuable player. Other efficiency awards went to Bob Carlisle, Jack Lofstrom, Rudy Visnich and Dan Capozzoli. The Muskies have hopes for another successful season in 1956 with twenty-two returning lettermen. Ed Sherman, Muskingum’s great football coach, was named Ohio College Football Coach of the Year for 1955 by the coaches of the Ohio Colleges and Universities. Sherman, who has an overall football record that is very impressive, coached the squad to the first undefeated season since 1934. Sherman is a graduate of Muskingum, class of 1936. A star quarterback in his college days, Sher- man recognized his “excellent coaching staff,’ the team for their “fine spirit and hard work,” and the entire stu- | 2 dent body for their “outstanding support,” when he was notified of the honor. Benedict and Capozzoli added the extra points. MUSKINGUM 19 AKRON 7 A stubborn Akron University team proved to be the first real test for the Muskies before a record crowd of 24,025 in the Rubber Bowl. McDaniel tossed 23 yards to Visnich for one touchdown. The Muskie line held the Zips to only 35 yards on the ground to spark the win. Capozzoli and Smithers plunged for the other scores and Carlisle booted the extra point. MUSKINGUM 23 OHIO WESLEYAN 19 Dan Capozzoli plunged for a first period touchdown to lead the way to the third straight win for the Muskies. Visnich scored the second on a recovered fumble and Mc- Daniel waltzed around end for the final touchdown. Vis- nich tackled the Wesleyan quarterbacked for a safety and Carlisle converted three times to complete the scoring. Visnich, Coleman, and Gerlach were outstanding on de- fense for the Muskies. MUSKINGUM 29 WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON 0 W J’s team proved hapless as, the Muskies ground out 464 yards to bring the victory. Coleman opened the scoring with a 45 yard jaunt. Capozzoli scored twice, and Pletcher once. Placements by Carlisle and Benedict plus a safety accounted for the other points. MUSKINGUM 35 WOOSTER 14 (Migration Day) Over 500 students migrated to Wooster for their home- coming and watched the Shermanmen trounce Wooster for the seventh season in a row. The rugged Muskie line held Wooster’s vaunted ground attack to 22 yards net. Mc- Daniel’s passing to Visnich sparked the early Muskie scoring drives. Smithers and Capozzoli each scored twice and Coleman added the final score. Capozzoli and Car- lisle kicked the placements. MUSKINGUM 54 CAPITAL 14 (Homecoming) The Muskies piled up a 28-0 lead after the first period and coasted to victory, as an alert line held the Lutherans to 38 yards net on the ground. Smithers scored twice, Pletcher twice, while Coleman, Capozzoli, Mack and Bene- dict each scored once. Carlisle booted six consecutive conversions. The only disappointment was the failure of Captains Visnich and Collins, the Muskies’ secret extra point specialists, to convert after two late touchdowns. MUSKINGUM 38 DENISON 0 (Dad’s Day) Two first period touchdowns by Smithers and one by Capozzoli paved the way for an easy victory over the Big Red from Denison. Visnich and Pletcher scored the re- maining touchdowns. Capozzoli booted a field goal from the twenty-one yard line to complete the scoring. Carlisle booted four extra points, and Benedict, the fifth, as Deni- son failed to get beyond the Muskie 36 yard line. MUSKINGUM 40 MT. UNION 6 Touchdowns by Benedict, Carlisle, Capozzoli (2), Bright, and Pletcher paced the Muskies to their eighth straight victory, an undefeated season and the Ohio Con- ference Championship. Carlisle booted four points after touchdowns. The jubilant Muskies completed the game with a makeshift line-up including Visnich at quarter- back, Collins and Gerlach at the halves, McDaniel at end, and Smithers at guard. Basketball Coach Bob Burkholder coached the Muskies to a very respectable season of fourteen wins and six losses, and fourth place in the Ohio Conference. This represents the best effort of a Muskingum basketball team for several seasons. Joe McDaniel was chosen as honorary captain by his teammates and along with Lenny Nelson was chosen as Most Valuable Player. Joe is the only senior on the squad, so the outlook for an even better season next year looks good. Lenny Nelson led the Muskie attack with a 24.4 points per game average which establishes a new record in that department. Joe McDaniel scored on twenty-two consecutive free throws over a span of several games to establish another scoring record. Nelson also led the Ohio Conference in field goal accuracy and was in the top ten in several other categories. Bruce Westwood led the Ohio Conference in free throw percentage. Over all the Muskies played an excellent brand of ball which should bring credit not only to the players, but to the fine coaching of Bob Burk- holder and his capable assistant and JV coach Bob Stokes, a former Mus- kingum great. Stokes coached the JV team to an undefeated season of nine victories, which makes the prospects of next year’s season look even better.
