McGuire Wilhelm The world of writing and literature, from ancient Chaucer to the newest ink-damp work, running the gamut from the deepest intellectual tomes to the most fantastic wanderings of human imag- ination, is encompassed in the work of Muskin- gum's English department. The English faculty attempts to instill a love for the various types of literature and provides the foundation for an in- telligent appreciation of this type of expression. Practical everyday English is stressed as the de- partment strives to acquaint the student with the correct method of expressing himself in every- thing from business letters to research papers. .!Q45lf0r7 Y 5 Work Democracy is dependent upon intelligent citizen- ship, and intelligent citizenship is, in part, de- pendent upon a knowledge and understanding of the forces and deeds of the past, believes Muskingum's history department. Acting on this belief, the department provides complete cover- age of the world's recorded history, from a gen- eral survey of the most ancient civilization to a detailed study of contemporary trends. Headed by Professor DeJong, the department includes Drs. Work and Dale, both well acquainted by actual personal experience with the philosophy and personnel of European and African govern- ments. 29
