Through the study of history, government, eco'- nomics, and sociology, the Social Studies Depart- ment strives to teach an appreciation of our great American heritage, and an understanding of our country's government. lts goal is to shape respon- sible citizens. Paul T. Baldwin B.A., M.A. Coach teaches sociology and American government, in addition to being the football coach at M.H.S. He says that he considers sociology an avo- cation and government a provo- cation: there is a great need for students to understand their government so they can take their place as responsible citi- zens in our society. James H. Curnalia B.A., M.A. Pops , one of the Senior class advisors, teaches Ameri- can and world history. A con- firmed bachelor, his hobbies are reading, gardening, cook- ing, and photography. He thinks that the school spirit is lopsided--applied too much to athletics and not enough to such matters as corridor con- duct or support for musical, theatrical, or scholarly activi- ties. J. Paul Dunworth A.B., M.A. American history dnd Amer- ican government are the sub- jects Mr. Dunworth teaches. M. H. S. doesn't consistently have enough school spirit. 22 Edward C. Hager B.A., M.A. ' ----a proud papa for the first time in November, l96l. Mr. Hager is the basketball and golf coach and teaches Ameri- can government. The backing our students give our athletes is the best I have ever seen .and certainly reflects the overall en- thusiasm of this school. George K. Hughes A.B., M.A. ' ' Mr. Hughes is a graduate of the University of lllinois and teaches world history. Every responsible citizen in our Amer- ican democracy must know his- tory. lf the citizen does not know it, he is doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Ruth Y. Terry B.A.. M.A. Reading and study skills are basic to every school suc- cess, comments Mrs. Terry who is in charge of the new speed-reading course at M.H.S. Mrs. Terry is also the Thespion advisor. Florence Tool B.A., M.A. Mrs. Tool, a French teacher at M.H.S. is well qualified hov- ing not only graduated from the University of Colorado, but also from Radcliffe and the Sorbonne in Paris. Harold R. Weaver A.B., M.A. Mr. Weaver is a sophomore English teacher. When asked about school spirit, he replied that school spirit is generally good. He feels that upperclass- men are ahead of the sopho- mores in this respect, but he is certain that they will catch up. Lindsey Wilhite B.S. A popular newcomer to the M.H.S. faculty, Mr. Wilhite teaches French and Spanish. Believing in the importance of his work, he comments, Per- haps in the final analysis, it will be through languages that we will at last solve the worId's problems. Dale Wingler B.S. School spirit is a parallel to adult community spirit, be it in athletics, in dramatics, or what- ever activity a person becomes a part, states our Booster Club advisor, Mr. Wingler. Depend- ing on the season, this English teacher lists his hobbies as swimming and grading themes!

Ivan R. Huyser B.S., M.A. Mr. Huyser is a member of the social studies department, teaching American history and government. Sailing is his great pastime and he has competed in a good many races. Mr. Huyser thinks the girls at M. H.S. have especially fine school spirit. William H. Paulson Ethel E. Pihlstrom B.S. According to Miss Pihlstrom, B.B.A., M.A. school spirit means: Mr. Paulson is a graduate of the University of Michigan and is a world history teacher. He is a member of the team- teaching program, a new in- novation ot M.H.S. this year. l. Being a student in the correct meaning of the term. 2. Being considerate in all areas: classroom, study- hall, lunchroom. 3 Making M.H.S. the besl' school anywhere. 4 Some students do not live up to their ideas of good school spirit and thus bring dishonor on our school. Miss Pihlstrom teaches A- merican history and is a Junior class advisor. George Russeher A.B., M.A. Mr. Russcher is the father of tour. His hobbies are gardening and reading. A member of the social studies department, he teaches American history. The study of American history should help students to appre- ciate our great American herit- age, understand our country's government better, and help to develop better citizens in our democracy. Matt L. Tomasiewicz B.A. Mr. Tomasiewicz taught at M.H.S. for the second time this year, the first time: when he was a student teacher. A member of the social studies department, he teaches Ameri- can and world history. Know your history and know your world! R. A. Zimmerman A.B. Halt at a teaching team at M.H.S., Mr. Zimmerman teach- es American history. lThe other half is Mrs. Zimmermanll Ac- cording to him, some students tail to realize that absence and tardiness are evidences of poor school spirit as well as poor citizenship.
