The three central areas of the English curriculum are language, composi- tion, and reading. The aims of the English de- partment are to teach students to use the Eng- lish language clearly and effectively in written and in spoken form and to teach them to read with understanding and appre- ciation. ln a larger sense, the aims are not con- cerned merely with teach- ing knowledge and skills in these areas but also to develop attitudes of per- manent interest in lan- guage, writing, and read- ing. Gladys H. Bond A.B., A.M. A Miss Bond is a graduate of Northern Michigan College of Education and U.S.C. Her hob- bies include reading and play- ing the piano. l Huldah Burdick A.B., M.A. I feel that English and speech are the two most im- portant tool subjects used by all of us, all our lives--by these we are rated socially and in our work. l Sarah A. Cautehie A.B., M.A. Mrs. Coutchie is the English department coordinator. A person's degree of success in his.occupational lite and his happiness in his personal and social lite is determined im- measurably by his ability to read,-to write, and to speak. Helen Dykema B.A. Through books one can learn the maiesty of great po- etry, the wisdom of the philoso- phers. Literature and books have immortalized man's knowledge. My goal or purpose is to inspire the students to share all this by reading. Joan C. Gainey B.A.. M.A. The 'Hope' campaign illus- trates Muskegon High's devot- ed spirit.

l Joan J. Dodd M.A. One of M.H.S.'s new coun- selors is Miss Joan Dodd who comes to us by way of Wies- baden, Germany and Suffolk, England, where she taught and counseled in U.S. Air Force De- pendent Schools. Horriett M. Reid B.S. When the going gets tough, it seems to me our school spirit is at its peak. Loyalty is the basis for real school spirit--not just a Big Show. l Vernon A. Jensen A.B., M.A. A graduate of M.H.S., Mr. Jensen is now a teacher and counselor in the Muskegon School System. School spirit is desirable but don't forget that there are many other fine schools and students around us. Mr. Jensen likes the fact that M.H.S. is willing to, try new ideas and to keep pace with the times in becoming more and more a comprehen- sive high school to benefit all students. g l Kenneth C. Kloberg B.S. The father of five, Mr. Kol- bergs hobbies are reading and cabinet making. He is a mem- ber of the counseling depart- ment and is a graduate of Western Michigan University. qi, 5 ti, . i, , i' f i lflliTlfF'fff fi!! Muskegon High School students are proud of their school. Therefore, the spirit at M.H.S. is good.

Martha L. Hall B.A. Another M.S.H. graduate on the staff. At the time I gradu- ated our school was criticized for its lack of school spirit. l feel that school spirit is impor- tant and that we have even less spirit now than we did in l955. William J. Harrison A.B. English and journalism are Mr. Harrison's department. I'm afraid our school spirit is too mechanical and not as genuine as it could be. The art of clean, concise communication is a field which most people could do well to understand. Marian C. Helvie 8.5. Senorita Helvie is a well seasoned traveler, having done Spain and Central and South America several times. Hemispheric solidarity is on important part of our future existence. Joanne E. Johnson B.A. Mrs. Johnson is a first- timer at M.H.S. this year. She graduated from Michigan State University. I would like to see the enthusiasm at athletic con- tests demonstrated in all school and related activities. Marcella M. 0'Connor A.B. Mrs. O'Connor is a graduate of University of Michigan and teaches senior English. Only through the discipline of lan- guage is truth revealed. Nancy K. Poff B.A. Miss Poff wants to encour- age others to love literature as much as she does. She thinks pep assemblies should be after school and thinks M.H.S. has loads of school spirit.
