1 v ' 5 5f-L. or should know that the basic reason for a school's existence is to provide the opportunity for learning. School spirit enters into this learning when we have interest in supporting all activi- ties, good scholarship, debate, music, drama and athletics. If any school permits these activities to become more important than the excellence of studies, then the school is not serving the purpose for which it was created. Much can be learned in giving and taking depending on whether the team wins or loses. We learn the element of good sportsmanship, which is basic in being a good citizen. I believe our school is one that is aware that the necessity of good achievement in school studies is basic, and secondary are the many activities that we participate in as spectators or take an active part in.

School spirit goes much deeper, however. lt is the reflection of pride in that of which we are a part. Muskegon High School has had a long tradition of things of which to be proud. Academic standards have been such that people are proud to say they graduated from Muskegon High. Excellent lstaff, a fine student body, courses of study, oppor- tunities and activities to chal- lenge all students, music, dra- matics, athletics, forensics -- all these have been basic to the fine spirit which is Our own Mus- kegon High. ! School spirit - - - implies many things. It in- cludes loyalty to the ideas ond traditions of the school, deter- mination to maintain the high standards set for us by those who have preceeded us here, and a striving for constant im- provement and reaching to- ward perfection. School spirit is reflected in little ways, in the friendliness and cooperation of students, the respect they show each other and their teachers, the pride they take in a clean and beautiful campus. Muskegon has always been known for its high standards and fine school spirit. May she long continue to uphold her fine reputation! MRS. KYES, Ast.
