Playing way below par, 20 points were scored against Muskegon in the first half. Shaken out of their lethargy, the Big Reds drove everytime they got the ball in the second half and, with an additional one or two minutes, might have tied it up. Roger King turned in an outstanding job at guard for the Big Reds. Muskegon 19 Moosehart 13 M 0 12 0 7-19 MS 0 7 6 O-M13 The Big Reds added an Illinois hair-piece to their collection of out-state scalps as they squeezed by n terrifically fast Moosehart crevs at Hackley Stadium. A last period interception provided the margin of victory for the Muskegon club. Huttenga in the backfield and jim johnson, Bob Freiberg, and Bonifield on the line played good ball against the colorful opposition. Looking again like the powerhouse who had rolled oier rugged Flint Central earlier. Muskegon opened the scoring in the second period when fiooke tharged over from the !2 for a TD., the first of three for the rampaging fullhack. Dagen and Dell each tallied one for the Muskies. The defense, led by Larry Bonifield and joel Boyden, limited the Colden Tornados to just seven yards, Dagen, who axeraged 30 yards a try in the last quarter, scored one T.D. and set up another which was scored on a fivehyard jaunt hy Dick Cooke. jim DeVries added both points. bests Heights in annual classic Muskegon 27 Muskegon Heights 7 M 7 014 6--W27 MH tl 7 0 O - 7 ln the final game of the season, Muskegon downed their traditional rivals, the Heights Tigers. In a game in which defense played the biggest part, M's not only charged the Heights offense to a standstill, but also produced two touchdowns on a blocked punt and a pass interception. Dick Cooke headed the scoring with three T.D.'s. The line led by jack Hesse, Larry Weltrle, Bill Rodewald, joel Boyden, and Larry Boni- field and the backfield made up of Cooke, Dagen, Sowa, and I-luttc-nga broke the Heights back. Bill Rodewaltl jerry Sowa QQ' The joyful Big Reds celebrate their smashing Heights victory. Eighteen awarded letters In a season ,marked by ups and downs, the 1953 Big Reds proved they were equal to any team in the state on their good days. In the two opening games of the season, the defense was exceptional. The opponents gained a net of 52 yards. Then - a low ebb as Muskegon met disaster in their next two starts. Meetu.L two Indiana teams on successive weekends, the Big Reds got back on a winning basis by Vwhitewashing both of them. The Muskegon victory train was derailed for the last time by a Saginaw team that took advantage of first-half breaks. Winning by a last minute interception, the Big Reds upset a fast Moosehart, Illinois squad. The Muskies completed their season in high style by,ripping the Heights Tigers apart for the third consecutive time. Out of eighteen Iettermen, fourteen will graduate, leaving only four as a nucleus for next season. Dick Cooke was named most- valuable player and Don Carpenter won the honorary letter to close out a succesful season with six wins, two losses, and one tie. Larry Wehrle 27
