Potter unveiled the 1953 edition of Big Reds against Lansing Sexton. Though the score was low, Muskegon's powerful ground attack provided a huge mar- gin in every other department. Dick Cooke scored the winning touchdown on a 32 yard sweep around right end. Muskegon 20 Flint Central 6 M 7 7 O 6-20 FC 0 0 6 O- 6 journeying to Flint for their second game of the season, the Big Reds slapped defeat on a team which was to place in the runner-up position in the battle for the state champ- ionship. Dick Cooke, sparkplug fullback, lcd the way for the Big Reds with his powerful running. He scored twice and Larry Dell once for Muskegon. The defense again was tremendous. 24 Muskegon 7 Alpena 7 IW 0 7 O 0 -M 7 A 0 0 0 7 -- - 7 The Big Red's second home game brought an unheralded Alpena team to Hackley Stadium. Their defense success- fully throttled all of M's efforts except a S4-yard slant by Dick Cooke. The vaunted Big Red defense, which had given up just 32 yards in the first two games, relinquished 176 to its upstate foe. Cooke, Hesse, and Sowa collaborate to shove Alpena hack out-of-bounds.

Looking again like the powerhouse who had rolled oier rugged Flint Central earlier. Muskegon opened the scoring in the second period when fiooke tharged over from the !2 for a TD., the first of three for the rampaging fullhack. Dagen and Dell each tallied one for the Muskies. The defense, led by Larry Bonifield and joel Boyden, limited the Colden Tornados to just seven yards, Dagen, who axeraged 30 yards a try in the last quarter, scored one T.D. and set up another which was scored on a fivehyard jaunt hy Dick Cooke. jim DeVries added both points. Gordon Huttenga busts over for a touchdown against Moosehart. l
