VARSITY BASKETBALL MALVIN'S TROPHY Awarded to the first win ner ot three consecutive games between Muskegon and our Tigers. This year our varsity cagers got off to a fast start by whipping the Grand Rapids city champs, but after that they ran into some tough competition and some bad breaks. The Tigers were at a disadvantage in height this season, and in experience, but they formed a scrap- py organization, forcing most of their foes to the limit to win. With a little luck, our Tigers could have had a much better record. The Tigers plan revenge for next year, never let- ting a fair season stand in the way of a better one. Coach Okie Iohnson and his boys will be on the warpath again next year, as usual. Things will probably happen. Football 'F' if 'A' if Our Tiger Reserve football and track squads are fortunate in having Coach David R. McKenzie as their head mentor. Mac is a friendly, helping coach who has been turning out good athletic machines for the last eighteen years at our Mus- kegon Heights High school. He gained his ability and knowledge of football and track ' during his high school and college days as a standout player v and sportsman. During his high school days at Monroe, Mich- igan, Mac proved his worth, but he hit his peak at Central Michigan College of Education fMt. Pleasantl. It was here Mac came through with brilliant performances in track, bas- ketball, football, and baseball. He earned eight major awards in these four sports. In 1927, Mr. McKenzie came to our school to begin his ex- cellent record. He has winning percentages in football over all schools played, except Muskegon, and his teams each year are noted for their sportsmanship and ability. We wish to express our qratefulness to a fine coach and wish him much success in the future. Coach McKenzie Season Summaries Oct. 6, Holland-The Tiger Reserves rang up the curtain of their abbreviated season by play- ing host to a heavy but awkward Holland grid club. The Little Tigers played exceptionally good football to come out on the long end of a 3E-O count. Oct. 13, Muskegon-Our Bengal Seconds suf- fered their first loss of the early season when they faltered as a determined Muskegon eleven stacked up a 24-7 advantage. The Tigers ral- lied, but the game proved to be in the bag for the Little Reds. Oct. 19, Grand Haven-Coach David Mc- Kenzie's Tigers rebounded from their defeat by taking it out on the hapless Buccaneer squad on the 1atter's gridiron to a 33 to O tune. Oct. 26, Grand Haven-The Blue and Gold came to the Little Tigers lair in an attempt to redeem themselves but were clawed badly to a 31-O extent. Nov. 3, Holland-The Tigers lengthened their victory string to three, as they climbed the frame of a Holland team in the rain and mud of the Woodenshoes' grid oval. The game was shortened because of the weather, but the score was 32 to 0 at the end of play. Nov. 10, Whitehall-The victorious, vicious charges of Coach McKenzie next took the measure of the Whitehall varsity 26 to 12. The game was rough and many injuries resulted, but our Tigers held the upper hand. Nov. 17, Muskegon-Our Tigers played the Muskies, in the prelude to the main game, al- most to standstill, but were behind 13 to 0 at the half. The Tigers came back in the last half to score, but failed on a last-minute pass to tie the game. As a result, the Muskies were on top 13 to 7 as the curtain came down. WN , -1 lgk, x f Q 1 ' Y !
