Five Veterans returned for the l944 baseball season to form a fine nucleus around which Coach Oscar E. lohnson built the cur- rent team. Henry Olah, sparkling fielder and consistent hitter was chosen captain. He is a shortstop. Other veterans returning were lack Weisenburger, a pitcher and outfielder, Aut Mathews, first baseman, Vance Crane, catcher, Wallace Wood, outfielder, Promising newcomers in- clude among others: Ed Petrongelli, Larry Boone, Clarence Kins- man, Iohn Polanyi, Don VanderWeele, Dale Aker, lim lohnson, Leland Branch, and Richard Caughey. When this section of the Oaks went to press, the Tiger nine had played only one game this season, winning from Whitehall out of town, 10 to 3. Weisenburger pitched a one-hitter. Other teams on the schedule are Grand Haven, Holland, Kalamazoo, Muske- gon, North Muskegon, Holton. McKenzie, had a difficult job on his hands in order to mold the Tiger thinclads into a strong, Well-balanced team. At the time this section of the Oaks Went to press, it ap- peared that Mac was doing very well. The Tigers appear very strong in the track events but are no- toriously Weak in field events. Lyle Currie is one of the most promising milers in the state at this Writing. Dick Thomas, a junior, has done very well in practice in the hurdles and Ioe I-Iegedus, a junior, holds his own in the dashes. Larry Wing and Don Iohnson have stepped off some fast times in the half-mile. Bob Werner and Paul Cook have done some good Work in the 440. -104-
