YCC continued and a lot of canoeing, provided for a break in the hectic weekly work schedules. Thanks to YCC, Chicken Creek flowed smoothly, free of wood snags, inviting nature-lovers to a better looking area. Our school, with its landscaping still in infant stages, matured rapidly as 105 different types of evergreens were planted throughout the grounds. The grass was mowed and well taken care of and bare spots were soon sprouting thick and full, evening out the once blochy lawn. One of the more difficult tasks awaited the crew sent to Weed Park. Workers here had to lay rock at the lagoon to prevent the edges from weakening and slumping into the duck's territory. On a recreation day, the entire group went to the Fairport Fish Hatchery to study the fish and learn about the operation of a hatchery. Did the intricacies of shooting a rifle ever intrigue you? YCC'ers learned the fundamentals of clay pigeon shooting at the Isaac Walton Lodge. Beside learning carpentry and nature hints, a trip to a district rally served as a good basis for new friendships to be formed. The Youth Conservation Corps began in 1974, and in two years has developed an organization of professional high school ecologists trained in the field of area improvement.
