THE GRAND FINALE The graduating class of 1976 marched into the field house in rigid rows as pagentry, custom, and enthusiasm engulfed participants and observers. The 349 graduates filed in as the first graduating class of the new high school on May 27. Concluding the march down the aisle, the upperclassmen took their seats as Principal Frank Allen made his recommendation of the Senior class. Superintendent Arthur Sensor presented the class to the school board, represented by Mr. Herbert Sywassink while Reverend Morrison performed the Benediction for the ceremony. Briskly stepping, the graduates evacuated the field house to go forward into their chosen professions, teacher, lawyer, banker, doctor, mechanic, hair dresser, secretary, housewife . . . the list is endless. The world that lies ahead of them is full of happiness, sorrow, health, and sickness. The expectations run high and achievement is possible for them. Hanging up their robe, each person once again forgets about future plans and goes off to parties with friends and families. After hours of preparation and anticipation, the young girl was dressed in her flowing formal dress with corsage and entering the Elks Lodge with her 'tuxed' escort. The brightly decorated ballroom serves as an escape into the world of a Dream Weaver. The band strikes the first chord and the 1976 Iunior-Senior Prom begins. The 1976 Prom was held on May 7, at 9:00 PM. Providing music was the Iowa City band, This Side Up, which played traditional songs, the top 40, and the theme song, Dream Weaveru. During an intermission, the Schnogleeack Staff provided a skit recalling good memories of the past school year. Refreshments were furnished by the Iunior class and served by members of the Sophomore class. Following the dance, couples attended a midnight movie, Where Does It Hurt? at the Boston Cinema. Leaving the theatre, the couples went their separate ways to attend one of many parties being held. As dawn approached, breakfast consisting of eggs, rolls, and coffee cake was served to the remaining few. Tired, but full of joy and happiness, the young man leaves his girl at her home, jumps into the car and arrives home ready for several hours of sleep. The boutonniere is removed from the rented tux and tossed with car keys, wallet and M change on the dresser. The prom is over but happy memories flood the subconscious as the eyes close and sleep enfolds. 10 Prom! Graduation 1976 Tears of joy and silent wishes of good luck are expressed by Cynthia lohnston as she hugs lean Lettenburger after Commencement.

Countdown5..,.4...3.. 2 . . . 1 R-r-ring. The last bell of the school year bade a final fare- well to eager beach bums, base- ball nuts, frisbee flippers and summer funatics. I Whether by lake, pool, river or in the backyard, students could be seen passing the butter and slaving to the sun for the sake of darker skin. Braver skin went unprotected by oil or sunscreens, only to come in later boasting beautiful burns. With frisbee still a warm weather craze, picnic areas such as Weed Park, Wildcat Den, and Saulsbury Bridge were monopolized by experts and amateurs alike. Adults and teenagers spent hours hurling the bright colored disks back and forth. Soon they developed trick shots ranging from behind the left ear to between the legs. Competing for field space were the baseball lovers at Weed Park. When the frisbee flippers flew out the baseballers batted their way in. There field com- petitors made the best of their 12 Summer Funflobs l time improving hitting, pitching, and fielding. Swimming had to the most popular sum- mer recreation, bring- ing out the best in all water bugs . Many students took advantage of their love for the sport and became life- guards, putting their fun to a in in good and profitable use. Swim- ming was still the coolest and most refreshing way to beat the midsummer heat of Iuly and August. It was also as good a chance -as any to get together with friends before the bell that began our summer good- times called us back for another year. ' Making your own friends and fun--that's what summer '76 was all about. Not quite laws , but Karen Gray exhibits a triumphant smile as a result of her angling success at the Saulsbury Bridge. The Saulsbury Recreation Area provides a widespread variety of accommendations for summer fun.
