vga? fA.' i jtilttlll The Energy Crisis By Rhonda Lee The winter of 1976-77 will not soon forgotten by the students of Mur- State University or the nation. is record breaking season has droughts in the West, freezing mperature in Florida, blizzards the country and a nation- shortage of natural gas. The gas were to such extremes as to President jimmy Carter asking ation to formulate energy con- rvation programs in hopes of O . . ng an energy emergency L cally, Murray State University the city of Murray joined the and the state of Kentucky in bserving a number of conservation ctics. t Dr. Thomas B. Hogancamp, vice- resident for administration and nance, devised a policy of energy -onservation for MSU which was put into effect january 26. The policy consisted of five points: - All building temperature con- trols were set at 65 degrees or lower. - All domestic hot water was cut off, except in the Carr Health Build- ing, Fieldhouse, Student Center, Stu- dent Health Center and dormitories. - The temperature in the central receiving and warehouse area of the General Services Building was reduced to the lowest levels possible without damaging stored items. - The ceramic kilns were fired only to meet minimum requirements. - The temperature in Wrather Hall, Wilson Hall and Wells Hall was reduced by cutting off the heat inthe central control rooms and then turned on again only as necessary to maintain the designated tempera- ture. Hogancamp said the failure of the contractor to keep the new tempo- rary electric boiler, which was pro- jected to have been ready for use in December, on-line at the site of the heating and cooling plant also com- plicated the energy problem at MSU. The city of Murray adopted an energy conservation plan which called for all businesses to cut oper- ating hours by at least 20 per cent and to use every method possible to save energy, especially natural gas. The program also asked residents, except in the cases of illness, to reduce home temperatures to 65 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. City and county government offices, with the exception of protec- tive services, changed to a four-day work week in cooperation with Gov- ernor julian Carroll's statewide plan to reduce state employees hours. Convocations The first convocation of the year drew only about 150 students. These students took advantage of the opportunity to speak directly to Dr. Curris and Tim Langford, Hickman, president of SGA. Popular topics of discussion were parking problems, access problems, energy and book- store prices. The convocations, spon- sored by the SGA, are designed so students can directly ask questions without having to go through the many barriers they often face. 1, --V - -Y-E, V..
