basketball team wins first district For the hrst time in Murray's history, the basketball team won a District i5 championship. They gained this distinction by defeating Johnson, Humboldt, and Vvilson in the three games of the district playoffs. The game against Wilson was unquestionably the most exciting ond crucial of the series. The Pilots and Redmen, city co-champs, battled nip- ond-tuck through most of the game. The game wasn't decided until the last minute with the Pilots winning -45-43. Einar Gustavson was Murroy's high scorer in this game with l5 points, followed by Bill Wayrie with l3. As District champs, the Pilots entered the Region 4 playoffs. Murray met Montgomery in what proved to be an exciting clash. The game was tied 49-49 at the end of the game, but the spirited Pilots pulled the game out in the overtime period 5553. Murray's string ol victories was tinally broken when the Red Wing team overpowered the Pilots to win the Region championship. Starting the season as a young and underrated team, the Murray quintet progressed steadily throughout the season to end up as co-champions of the city conference, District l5 Champions, and as runner-up of Region 4. After a somewhat mediocre record in non-conference games, the Pilots faced Wilsoit, a pre-season favorite, in Jim Ullyot Murray s consistent guard drives around a Monroe defender to score two more points for the team as they beat the Green Wave 62 25 O Einar Gustavson waits for the precise moment to go up for his favorite lump shot in the Mechanic Arts game O Play maker Carl Giertson is about to set up one of the Pilot forwards as he skirts the defense of the Central team in the Pilots only lo ing tilt Fog l Ea ,f 1' , . , . . .
