DAN GLEASON - End DUQUOIN Team spirit was high as the squad traveled to DuQuoin to face a high rated DuQuoin team. However, there was never any doubt from the opening kickoff that this was Murphysboro's game as they trounced the Indians 41-0, BENTON Murphysboro continued to improve as they subdued their next foe on the list, Benton by a score of 22-6. The Devils had a near perfect first half as they held the Benton Rangers to a -4 yards rushing. WEST FRANKFORT A cocky Murphysboro team next traveled to West Frankfort where they leamed the value of being too sure of themselves. A spirited Red Bird team used a strong defense to hold Murphysboro to a 0-0 tie. The Devils drove to the West Frankfort one yard line in the closing minutes of the game, but could not get that final yard. HENRY SAUERBRUNN - Guard ,tsl Scuras gets pulled down after a 10 yard gain. SPARTA A flu stricken Murphysboro team put up a gallant fight but had to give up their first conference loss to a very strong Sparta team. The Murphysboro Red Devils began the 1957 football campaign with a team handi- capped by lack of experience. However, they went ahead to pile up a traditional winning record which included 6 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. HARRISBURG Murphysboro got off to a shaky start in their season openerg nevertheless, they emerged with a '7 -0 victory. Eddie Shaw was the hero of the game as he picked up a fumble with 24 seconds re- maining in the game and scampered 50 yards for the game winning touchdown. PINCKNEYVILLE Pinckneyville scored the initial touch- down on their first play, which provided the spark for the Red Devils as they came surging back to win the game handily 40 -6. Managers busy themselves preparing for oncoming season. CHESTER Murphysboro used Chester fumbles together with a strong running attack to trounce Chester by a score of 37-0. The Red Devil defense again proved to be one of Southem Illinois' best. ANNA Murphysboro's underdog Red Devils next traveled to Anna to face the unbeaten Wildcats for the Conference Champion- ship. Murphysboro came within a fraction of pulling an upset but had to settle with a 0-0 tie, when their 3rd period touch- down was called back on a penalty. The devils outplayed the DON GENOVESE - Quarterback Wildcats in every department but had to surrender the Championship to them because of the tie. A victory would have given the Devils the Championship. CARBONDALE The traditional game between these two rivals was featured by an evenly fought first half. However, the Devils came back strong the second half and powered their way to a 20 -0 victory. HERRIN Murphysboro closed their season by play- ing Herrin.
