“And I ; x, y, A Reading 'ritin', and 'rithmetic are undeniably the fundamentals of learning, but at Murphy, many other courses are offered. Fine arts courses in instrumental and vocal music and art; commercial courses, like typing and bookkeeping; vocational courses, including drafting, radio, and small engines; and vocational courses in diversified occupations—these are just a few. In the Commercial department, Carolyn Freeman displays her skill in reaching the mark of 100 wpm on a one-minute write. Against a background of azaleas Carolyn Merrill, Barbara Willard, Odessa Aldridge, and Ed Cox make outdoor sketches of Murphy buildings in water color and charcoal. Diversified Occupations workers, Frances Beard and Mary Berg, entertain their bosses at the Azalea Banquet held in a local hotel. As part of the home economics course, Kay Wall, Janet Walley, and Joy Wade gain homemaking experience by setting a table, using a mixer, and baking a cake. A course offered for the first time this year is small engines, where Tommy Mitchell and George Weiss tinker with engines and make the wheels go 'round. Eugene Broadus and Floyd Wilson hover over the drafting board. In the crafts class, Roy Bixler tools leather, while Douglas Peavy studies a catalog, from which he will order his own materials.
